My brother in law is the one who turned me onto classical music and he was very well versed in it. He was the one who told me that Jean Sibelius once said: "Other composers give you pink champagne, I give you clear cold water." I miss him very much as he died several years ago. God bless you Vance.

A truly fabulous performance of this underrated symphony, usually lost in the shadow of its big sister Sibelius No. 2. Sibelius was simply a master of the awkward and dissonant sound which unexpectably pivots into the most glorious romantic melody. Just love the thunderous timpani ending.

Sibelius had genius for bringing feelings about nature to his music. Beautiful performance!

It's really awesome that although some moments clearly resembles Tchaikovsky's melodic and orchestral ideas, unique Sibelius' own voice takes over the whole symphony. Sometimes when you hear similarities between composers you could take it as weekness, lack of vision. But here is other way round: Sibelius takes advantage of "russian" ideas and develops music in a very own specific way: some dark orchestration, finnish folk melodies, chromatic passages, quick and unexpected turns in musical narration, intense dialogue between small groups of orchestra instead of complex polifonic texture, and so on. Finally he prevails!

Performed this piece at university over nine years ago. When I heard it in real life for the very first time I instantly fell in love with it

I remember the first time I heard Sibelius 1; I was in Madison, WI and it was 2009. Truly mesmerized. Love the abrupt plucking of the chords that ends both the first and final movements.

Very impressive orchestral writing with great distinctiveness. A true Sibelius masterpiece.

sibelius, the last giant before shostakowitsch, whom one could not yet guess, who was snubbed by maler, who themselves stuck to the 19th century and failed at bruckner. sibelius, who was inspired by the song of the swans, the mists of finland, your overflowing emotions. he created in solitude, found inspiration in solitude, left the 19th century behind without suspecting where the muses would take him. a giant of the north who was one of the very few geniuses who knew his own limits. truly a large one, minimalist yet complex! what is strangely brilliant about sibelius sit is that he already seems complete with his first symphony. his music is so dense that he can manage with the most economical means. maler could not harm him and shostakowitsch learned from him.thank you my prince!

Absolutely incredible performance. Jarvi brings an exceptionally moving interpretation to this masterpiece and the orchestra is outstanding. The very soft echo of the final pizzicato is a powerful ending and perfectly played. Thank you!

This is by far the best performance of Sibelius's First Symphony I've ever heard. It's a pity it's not for sale on iTunes ... but I did find one by Paavo's father Neemi Järvi, which is almost as good.
