I saw it at a rural drive in with my cousin and her friends. At the appropriate time my younger cousin jumped on our car, scaring the hell out of all of us and causing his sister to smack her head and wet herself at the same time.

John Carpenter definitely knew that tension is scarier than gore.

Laurie: "Was it the Minty Man?"
Dr. Loomis: "As a matter of fact, it was."

This is why you are a treasure Mark... you just settled a huge School Bus debate for me I am in my forties but I remember having arguments about whether or not she was originally supposed to be his sister and people throwing in my face this exact scene from the original that I now know was filmed in 1981 for television time padding...

Curtis Richards' novelization of Halloween was actually very good, and perhaps the best novelization I've ever read. The prologue in ancient Celtic Ireland that sets up the origin of The Shape is fascinating.

One of the best slasher movie to ever hit our screens.

Dude! Double thumbs up for the correct pronunciation of Samhain. 🎃 (I'm glad the tradition morphed to carving pumpkins instead of turnips)

I remember the buzz around this movie when it came out, teens were all over it. It really changed the way many people thought about the genre. Some for the better. Aside. I would really loved to have seen what Christopher Lee would have done with the Dr.

I saw this in the theatre when it came out. People were screaming "Run!" at the screen. It was quite an experience.

The only way you should watch the original movie is off of a VHS tape made from 1978-1985.

Quite possibly the best and the most influential slasher movie ever.

Minty I just want to say that I loved this entry about Halloween 78! I have been a fan and loyal subscriber for the longest time of your channel. You always bring such good information and and unsual stuff that I thought I would never know about a movie. Just when I think that I know a movie and all the information and behind the scenes and so forth, you always surprise me and wonderfully so! Your research and efforts are very well thought through and done to the most professional way possible. And I love the fun and enthusiasm that you have with presenting the information. My favorite part usually of each segment is when you talk about the posters. I'm a big poster fan too and I love learning new things about the posters of the movies. And my favorite part of this Edition is the weird Atari game that they did for this movie. I had no idea that they did that, it was so funny to watch. Keep up the good work Minty you are awesome!

This review is really nice, Minty. I live near the area where a lot of “Halloween” was filmed, and used to go see movies at the 1924 Rialto Theatre all the time in the 1980s when it was a revival theater. Those were my teenage years, seeing beautiful old movies there. They showed Rocky Horror there every Saturday, and I recall going to that at least two or three times, and singing along.

After an evening at the movies, there would often be a stroll around the “Halloween” location streets. And you know what? At night the area is tremendously beautiful and spooky. There has even been a local haunted house attraction in the area, it’s very shocking and frightening. A Halloween season thing.

By the way, across the street from the Rialto theater was a classic theatrical costumes and magic store that had very old stock and had probably supplied the performers of the Rialto Theatre in its vaudeville days, for such it was before it became a movie house.

*The store was called “Would You Believe...?” (I’m serious — it had a huge painted sign in front for decades, and it closed in the early 2000s... there’s a photo online somewhere —)*

If you haven't seen Carpenter's student film "Captain Voyeur, " I recommend checking it out.

And re: Dr Pepper, I think their big ad campaign was very popular at the time ("wouldn't you like to be a pepper too?"), so they could've been riffing on that during shooting breaks. And funnily enough, the guy from the Dr Pepper ad would go on to star in American Werewolf in London.

Fun fact: Nick Castle, who played Michael, directed Dennis The Menace (1993), The Last Starfighter (1984) and Major Payne (1995).

And to quote Michael Myers himself: "..." See ya!
That was a good touch.
