What you said about dating refers to marriage. Muslim men can marry non muslims(*in Malaysia both must be muslims or one has to convert into Islam in order to marry) but in Islam, the men can marry people of the book (jews and christians) but that isn't practiced in Malaysia.

Also like you alluded to, I think it's very much where you were based outiside the city. If you stayed in Mt Kiara or bangsar, I am very sure the socialising and dating scene in those areas are miles different

If you're seriously interested in setting your roots in Asia, then I suggest going to Thailand. Apparently they offer up to 15 year visa for foreigners, provided that you meet the criteria. I don't know anywhere else that can offer such.
