I'm doing that now at age 51. I joined the Army at age 19 and did 23 years and retired. I invested all those years. Stocks, mutual funds and maxed out a ROTH IRA. The dividends automatically reinvested and bought more shares. Recently I changed it, so it pays me. With Military pension and dividend income I do pretty good. It's how I did it.

Dividends are dope. Personally, I sometimes use my dividends to buy other dividend and growth stocks for diversification instead of reinvesting in the same stock. To each their own methods though. The good thing is that you’re investing in the first place and that’s what’s important. Salute for the content!

Jaspreet, I have a question. I currently invest in the SWPPX for my long term buy and hold mutual fund, without dividends.

I have a rental, and I'm looking to buy more. I would like to supplement my active income and use stock dividends as a way to help with down payments on future homes.

If I'm looking into ETFs for this particular real estate purpose, and let's say I will be withdrawing on occasion. Theoretically, I would look for a high yield ETF, with lowest expense ratios, and easy to trade, correct?

And if I were to buy on the down market, how would the mutual fund that invests in the S&P 500 bankrupt, if it's invested in the top 500 companies? Wouldn't that have to take a complete collapse of our economy if that particular S&P 500 fund files for bankruptcy??

How would we know what etf to buy on the down market if I don't know what to look for between etfs? I'm assuming I would need to learn to assess a business earnings report?

The majority does not have the patience to do dividend strategy because require long time and cant stand a big drop short term that's why they fail. But this strategy works flawless

I have my IRA with Schwab and they said i am not able to set-up an automatic investment every month to add money into SCHD. Perhaps i was asking the wrong way but does anyone do this through Schwab?
