An Introduction to Theosis (w/ Jay Dyer)

Hold up, did someone say we become GOD?? If you're like me, the first time you heard this, you were a bit concerned. As an evangelical, the concept of theosis can seem more than a bit foreign. In this video with Orthodox apologist Jay Dyer, we talk about what theosis is (and isn't) and in doing so we explore differences between Eastern and Western approaches to theology. The conversation includes discussion of the essence-energies distinction, monasticism, ways in which Protestants and Orthodox are similar (and different) and much more. I hope you enjoy it!

About Gospel Simplicity:
Gospel Simplicity began as a YouTube channel in a Moody Bible Institute dorm. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.

It's pre-recorded. The discussion already happened. It was perfectly friendly and civil. The idea that I am going to be "mean" to GS is silly.

It would be cool if you could pull an interview with Jonathan Pageau. He's a convert from protestantism (I think he was baptist) to Eastern Orthodoxy.

I think Jay Dyer might be aware of this himself but in his debates were he is ill mannered he usually is either correcting his opponent on a logical error or when his opponent insists on a logical error and he becomes angry. He is civil in all discussions I have seen and I have never seen him angry with arguments that don't possess logical errors even when he has a logical counter argument.

Jay Dyer helped pull me out of Protestantism. Being catechized into the Orthodox Church with my wife in one month and my beautiful baby girl is being baptized On Holy Saturday! Thanks Jay

I am extremely happy to see Jay on your show, Austin. I have known Jay personally for quite some time and have always found him personable, gracious, and cordial. I also know Jay is highly passionate in his defense of the Faith and many people appreciate that - some can't take it.

I do not take sides easily, for example I consider a certain carrot topped "apologist" who is technically on our side as beyond mentally ill while I have friendly exchanges with Catholic and Protestant apologists who have reached out but continually harping on a single event in Jay's debate history after he publically apologized is, quite simply, being the Prodigal Son's older brother.

If the Reason and Theology crew are so concerned about you hosting Jay, I would assume it has to do with their pathetically low view counts due to their addiction to drama and largely underwhelming content. Who wants to tune in each night to hear yet another slow, bitter, and repetitive rant from Michael about his brief time in the Orthodox Church? Do you?

Wow. Reason and theology literally trying to cancel Jay. Gross.

Jay was a massive factor in my conversion from Protestantism to Holy Orthodoxy. SUPER glad you gave him a chance, rather than caving to pressure from others who have a personal axe to grind

Very glad to see Jay come on. He has been instrumental in my very stubborn and slow walk towards orthodoxy.

Just wanted to say I owe my conversion to Orthodoxy to Jay debating Fuentes and Ybarra over the summer during 2019. Since then I’ve consistently listened to his content and it’s a rare occasion when he turns into the big meanie R&T whine about. That’s all.

Man, I just spent half an hour or more reading the comments, and the video doesn't even air for ten days. :fire:

Hey Austin, when are you posting your "My journey home to Holy Orthodoxy" video? ;)

As a Catholic this behavior I'm reading in this comment section is unbecoming of Christians and is nothing but pride and ego. Check yourselves and repent. I'm so sick and tired of coming online and just seeing waves of hate thrown towards Catholics from Protestants, to Jay Dyer from a lot of Catholics, everything. I don't really care if Jay is "toxic, " but even if in the past he has been toxic, that doesn't give you a right to come onto someone else's channel and attempt to police what content they do or do not post. If you don't like Jay or what he's saying, don't watch his videos. This behavior is unbecoming of what Christ called us to do and its aggravating as hell to read on a constant basis.

Jay is full of so much information it's crazy and he really gets you thinking on a lot of subjects, this coming from a Protestant looking east.

Austin, once I asked you to interview Fr. Spyridon Bailey. If you do this, please, would you consider to escape a little from this format to speak about the subject of his book "Orthodoxy and the Kingdom of Satan"? I think everybody will gain from it, really. Greetings from Brazil, greetings in Christ. Thank you!

P.S. You/we have much to learn with Jay. He is a great guy.

Cheers from Bangor Maine. I fully converted to Orthodox Christianity around October of last year. I spent about 2 years as an Orthodox catechuman before that. I attend a small Orthodox mission in my local area. I lived as a transexual for over a decade before I came to Orthodoxy.

Found Jay 3 years ago and he pretty much helped convert me to Orthodoxy from mega church Protestantism as well as a few others at the parish I’m at. Will be baptized God willing during Lazarus Saturday this lent.

St. Nicholas out here giving Arius the right hook and y'all are worried about Jay being "mean". Thank you for standing with Truth Jay, I would be worried if you weren't seen as "controversial" by the world. Bless you Austin for bringing these wonderful discussions to light.
