The year four hundred thirty one B.C. Spartans and athens battle to the death. The twenty-seven-year Peloponnesian war between Athens and Sparta breaks out. During the war, Athens' position of power collapses. The Persians get an opportunity to interfere in the fight between the Greeks. Later in the year, coincidentally, a plague hits Athens, Pericles dies of it. Socrates lays the foundation for analytic philosophy. About one hundred thousand citizens live in the city of Athens, and there are as many or more slaves.
