This is incorrect. I am a marine biologist and my phd thesis was on barnacles. At the adult stage they cannot detach from the substrate they are attached to. Only during the larval stage do they exibit this behaviour. The fresh water would kill them eventually but they would still have to be removed with force.

Smart idea and a lot less dangerous and obtrusive for the turtle (vs removing the barnacles with some sort of tool). Honestly - and I grew up near the ocean - I wouldn't have thought to put it in fresh water so the barnacles would die and fall off. And yes, so simple and sensible. Thank you to the man who "rescued" this **adorable** baby turtle.
