ER doctor teaches Heimlich maneuver

Comment if you’ve had to do this before!!!

If you find yourself in this situation, have someone else call 911 while you attempt this maneuver multiple times. You’ll know when to stop if a chunk of food comes out and/or the person can verbalize that they are OK. If this fails, you can attempt that forceful upward motion using the back of a chair under someone’s ribs.

Children under twelve should receive back slaps instead of the Heimlich. Will post another instructional video about this in the future 👍

So glad I learned this before my kid choked! It was scary and I had no choice but to keep trying, this works!

FYI - the Heimlich is not always effective so you should learn stomach thrusts as well. I was in a DFAC in Afghanistan when my friend started choking and I had to do the Heimlich. I am about 225 lbs and fairly muscular, and was not able to dislodge the food. As I was performing the maneuver, I saw a huge Czech soldier with a medic badge standing right next to me just watching. I thought I was doing something wrong and figured if my strength wasn't able to get it out, his would. I passed him off to the medic who was doing the maneuver with no luck either. Eventually my friend passed out and we laid him down and did finger sweeps of his mouth to ensure all of the food was out. Then someone else turned his head to the side and got in between his legs with his fists out into his diaphragm and have 2-3 heavy pushes inward and upward toward his throat. Out popped the food and my friend started breathing again after a few rescue breaths. In the end, I was told that the reason the Heimlich was not effective was because there was not a complete seal around the food since the individual was actively tightening his throat muscles to try to cough the food up. This meant that every squeeze was pushing air around the food and not up and out. Once he passed out, his throat relaxed and created a seal around the food which allowed for it to come up easier. I had been feeling like such a bad friend for thinking I wasn't doing it right but I was. As much as I hate that he had to go through that, now I feel much more confident on how to handle it if someone is choking. Also, it may be impossible to get the food up while they're conscious and it's not a complete seal if they cannot relax their throat to allow the maneuver to work effectively. I am pretty sure we broke a few ribs between me and the Czech soldier but my friend is still alive today! Hey Tony!

I had to have this when I was in cheerleading in middle school and I choked on a jolly rancher. Another student actually gripped me up and did it and it popped right out. Thank God they knew what they were doing!

Legally not allowed to be called the Heimlich any longer once the doctor that founded this technique passed his family stopped allowing it to be used.

You would never be able to heimlich your boy there. You'd never be able to gather the strength to get past that piece of steel he calls an abdomen.

Why do Americans still teach the Heimlich manoeuvre? I’ve done First Aid courses in Australia and the UK and they always stressed to NEVER do the Heimlich Manoeuvre as it is not very safe or effective, and to do sharp mid back blows with an open hand instead. I’ve also never met a Doctor who recommends it either but I always see Americans teaching it?
