Q&A - What is this pupa?

This looks like a pupa of a moth or beetle. There is no way to be sure by just looking at it. You can put the pupa in moist soil in a covered cup and see what comes out.

We found one in the school garden in San Francisco. We had a spare butterfly house so we put it in there. A red admiral butterfly came out! Apparently some butterflies have ground burrowing chrysalises!

Thought there would be more to this video. I found a Huge one in the leaves that was empty. Not sure what came out of it but it was as round as a thumb almost 2" long in a white paper cocoon. Hopefully a night time butterfly and not some scary bug.

I just got one on my backyard. I almost got the answer from that gentleman who said moth but then the lady said beetle. I can only wait to find out now.
