Portnoy = Wild as fuck

Man, that Mangini solo might be the coolest solo ever taken. I know y'all cut the clip before he wiped his brow with his books while doing single-handed rolls just to make them even slightly comparable 😂

I think in terms of chops and overall abilities as a drummer it's Mike Magini I'd prefer. Mike Portnoy was a great fit for DT because of his creative contributions that helped to define DT's written pieces of music. It seems that Mangini was relegated to being a long time session drummer in DT, playing drums for DT rather than being the DT drummer. I think the reason why DT didn't go with Virgil Donati in the first place was precisely because Donati was an even deeper composer/arranger than any of them between Petrucci, Rudess, and Myung, and is an alpha personality such that they couldn't reign him in (remember the audition video where Donati was trying to work out his own amazing ideas to their songs after sight reading Rudess' score!!!), where as Mangini might've been fine with being sideman...for a while anyhow.

There are definitely other drummers I prefer listening to than Mike Mangini, but there is no denying his technical skill is untouchable. I have never seen another mainstream drummer replicate the stuff he does

The mangini solo is one of the best ever. He was a different drummer then however.

That Mangini solo is out of this world. There is no window for comparison.

Better touch and soul, Portnoy

Mangini another level. Portnoy is a nice composer yet sells the same stuff for a long while

Every metric possible says Mangini is better. However, there is a very subtle thing that most of people don`t pick up which is what to play when to play and this is where Portnoy is better. He plays bespoke drums. Mangini is all over the place with his exercises. Listen to Dream Theater live with Mangini, it`s almost painful.

I'm the biggest Portnoy fanboy ever and even I can admit Mangini is the technician between the two.

MP is a VERY melodic drummer. Insane ability he has to nail the feel, pitch and sounds to weave through the songs and to just merge with the ensemble.

MM is like a surgeon. Necessary, precise, calculated, highly technical. Doesn't hinder his ability to support and be present, but that's where all the "robot" criticism comes from. He's the frame around the canvas.

Portnoy is a part of the painting.

Saw that particular Mangini solo live on Steve Vais Ultrazone tour in 2000… everyone who attended Vais Ultrazone tour would have remembered Mangini’s brilliance on drums…

fell hard for the song “Windows to the Soul” as well, with Mangini giving the song its percussive soul and heart beat… I can’t be the only one who felt this way when that album came out…

Mangini is not only technical, he is very creative too in which respect playing. Listen to how unique is that solo.

Mangini is an educator and a great technical drummer but as far as composing drum parts that will inspire several generations of drummers he just cant compete with Portnoy.
