Yes! Once again, we're replaying a classic slice of PC gaming on era-appropriate hardware. Just how well did Infinity Ward's genre-defining COD4 Modern Warfare run on what would have been an excellent games machines way back when the game launched in 2007?

You guys HAVE to do F.E.A.R next, this game was amazing back in the day and is somewhat overlooked nowadays and people only seem to remember Half Life 2, COD, etc, etc from this era. FEAR had some insane graphics for its time, especially physics and particles.

2007 was a top tier year for FPS games (Bioshock, Crysis,Halo 3, Portal, Team Fortress 2, HL2 Episode 2, The Darkness and Cod 4)

I love the Duty Calls intro. Indeed an obscure reference.

The reason 16:9 monitors replaced 16:10 wasn't really anything to do with usability, but rather companies wanting to cut costs. Because they were creating 16:9 panels for other purposes in large numbers, it didn't really suit them to be making 16:10 panels for a specific PC market. The more you mass produce something, the cheaper it is.

I just love when they cover games from the 2000's.

Do Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. That game looked absolutely phenomenal when it came out and it still is impressive today

I originally came to DF for the analysis, and it's still THE premiere place for performance and game engine analysis.

But these Time Machine videos along with DF Retro are my favorite

I remember playing this game and blowing my mind. I was running a 4870 1GB and e8400 at 4320x900. This was awesome. It was one of the first games I played on my first gaming rig.

24:10 Pro tip for anyone playing FC2 on a modern PC, remember to cap the frame-rate to 60, otherwise a bunch of systems (physics, AI, scripting) start to break for some reason. That being said, I didn't get these hopping soldiers last time I tried the game, this is hilarious. Instead I got objects falling through the ground and companion NPCs that got killed because the AI broke.

Its funny, people poop alot on CoD for being an unoriginal dudebro game, but it was really something special back in the day

28:40 - it's the Q6600, I had the same problem. I overclocked my Q6600 to 3.8GHz to mitigate the problem and finally then it would run at 1080p60fps when also used with an overclocked 8800GT.

Hey there is technical terminology for graphics that you guys used that I am sure not everyone knows what it means including me. Could you make a video explaining what these are, what they are used for, and also showing as to get a better understanding of videos like these. Thanks

The rain effects thing is interesting to discuss I think, because despite something as "old" as MGS2 implementing a quite advanced, very convincing effect as early as 2001, faking rain in a convincing manner just wasn't on the radar for most games.

Jump forward to 2009 for example and look at Halo 3: ODST; I'm sure we all remember the reveal trailer for that game prominently featuring rain as the Rookie climbs out of his drop pod and has to quickly evade a Covenant patrol. The ambiance and tone of that game also so naturally fit the "exploring a rain soaked city at night time" mood, that it's entirely possible that one might think back and remember the game itself featuring rain effects as you explored the city, but I remember a Bungie ViDoc explaining that there isn't any actual rain in ODST (at least on the Xbox 360) because of engine limitations. While Bungie were initially adamant that rain had to feature in the Mombasa Streets sections of the game, in the end it fell to the designers and audio team to make it "feel" like it had been raining because the engine just wasn't capable of doing what they wanted without significantly more work than was viable.

EDIT: The separate multiplayer .exe thing continued for _years_ after CoD4, it wasn't until quite recently that it changed.
