The impact of old fluid is hard shifting, slow gear selection (this is called hunting), reduced fuel economy, slower acceleration. Over time that will lead to a transmission failure, as the valve body becomes clogged and the passages narrow from the build-up, then fluid stops flowing, and then it overheats.

The drain method you've shown is a very good step. It does not flush out the torque converter as the transmission needs to be in operation for that to occur - start the engine, and while the old fluid is being allowed to drain out, new fluid is constantly poured into the fill port - while someone is shifting between Drive and Reverse (brakes applied so the vehicle does not move). That process is continued until all of the old fluid (visual inspection) is completely out - and the fluid level is checked.

This principle applies to Auto and CVT alike and will help to avoid the massive repair cost of a rebuilt/replacement transmission. Manufacturers state 'the life of the vehicle' as per life of the fluid, but the moment that your warranty is up, the repair bill is 100% on the vehicle owner.

Ideally, if you had a fluid extractor, you could siphon out 1qt of fluid every 15, 000 miles, and replace it with 1qt of new fluid.

Manual transmissions can go 50, 000+ miles without worrying about the fluid change, unless the operator is grinding gears regularly.

I would say that fluid is cheap compared to replacing a transmission, so replacing fluid even if early is a good practice.

Trust me man, this fluid is not dirty. It is far away from being dirty. The real dirty honda atf is when it has dark gray - graphite or pale black color, like dirty water from the puddle.

Yes, the ATF is like blood, when it is new it bright dark red color, but when it is used and worn it is dark and maroon like that used blood in our veins. Everything within the red spectre is normal even when it is dark. It is bad when the color shifts to dark gray or black meaning that it has been past due for a long time. In this case you need to drain the crap out of it and flush it several times to bring back to normal color, otherwise those 3 -4 qts of fresh fluid that you gonna change will not do much and become dirty again pretty fast within 100-200 miles, thats why you need to change it again. So every driver has 2 options, either change it every 80-100K miles with 3 rounds of change and drain OR to change it much more frequently but do only 3 qts at a time thus keeping your fluid always fresh.

I'd like to know how it's doing now after the fluid change. I've heard many times that it's not good to change it If it has a lot of mileage and from the looks of that fluid i would think it has a whole lot of mileage. My 07 accord has some pretty dark transmission fluid. I want to change it but im afraid of it would cause problems.

I change 3 qts of atf fluid every 5000 miles when I change my motor oil. It is just the least and the easiest the owner can do to invest in the longevity of life of his transmission.

unfortunately that dw1 will burn in less than 50k and so you need 15k refills. I have tried amsoil atf last year in a 50-50 mix with dw1, and added shiftrestore. Shifts so smooth now
