CDs sound better than any high res streaming service. I also think CD will be the last physical music format and that's great bc If they create a new one it will have DRM and will suck. Long live to the CD, best and most versatile and honest digital format ever created!!

The original design of the CD is spot on, we just need to get the mix/mastering process improved, e.g loudness wars

Suggestions for the Ultra CD:

• Add a non-scratch layer to the surface, like Blu-Ray.
• Remove the ridiculous region coding from DVD and BDs. That stupid rule was the business killing physical media, and it infects CDs as well.
• No more crappy plastic covers. Digipack only. Invent better way to hold CD in place.
• The CDs with higher storage capability has been invented 20 years ago. Use that, and max out the sound.

The fact that Schiit Audio released a CD transport with DDC functionality shows that there is still interest in CDs. Would be great if you could get it in for review.

My Cds aren't going anywhere. Good video

I still don't ever see them not making CD's though regardless of the mainstream consumers and auto manufacturs & computer industry moving on. I think the audio enthusiasts will always keep it alive just enough to never go away completely

We have hi-res in CD: SACD, DVD-Audio. Unfortunately, the price is much higher than a normal cd. Now, we have Blu-ray audio too. so we have options, unfrortunately, for most of the people, they don't care ! they are happy with Spotify, youtube music, we afficionados for audio, we are a niche now.

Hi. You eloquently described SACD, BluRay Audio, and other niche products. I love these products and redbook CDs.

In reality, the convenience of streaming video or audio from your sofa via a remote will probably win the day. The choice is immense and it’s so easy.

I have many hundred CDs, tens of SACDs and a dozen BluRay audio disks. But I also stream.

Sitting at my desk and saying Alexa play the Moody Blues is just so convenient.

Not giving up physical media any time soon but I may be a dinosaur.

When people wake up to the fact that streaming is only as good as your ability to pay… well I believe there will be a seismic shift back to CD and vinyl. I think this is already happening. Losing my job during Covid certainly taught me that lesson.

Hi Mike! This might seem a little off-topic, but please bear with me, as I promise you it's not. I just discovered a YouTube channel called Films By Color, which is hosted by a charming 31-year-old man named D.J. Martinez III. His videos review DVDs, but what makes them so important (to me) and so meaningful (hopefully to you) is that he stresses his love of physical media and the fact that such media are disappearing from stores. Of note, he prefers buying actual objects in real stores rather than ordering them online, and he has revealed that he doesn't have a single streaming service. One thing that makes his videos so charismatic is the way he holds the DVD boxes. You can see the respect and even awe he has for materials that can be touched. Given the fact that he's only 31, I find this enormously comforting and even reassuring that maybe, just maybe, there will be enough young people to make sure physical media don't disappear altogether. All the best!

I started building my collection of CDs a few years ago (my old collection was stolen several years ago) and it's crazy how hard it is to find certain CDs, and how expensive they are. Its nuts!

CD and SACD is the only thing I use so I buy as much as I can before they disappear.

The cd 💿, along with all physical media is 👑
Given the “social pressures” of our times ..there’s movies and music that have been edited..”for a modern audience “ ..as for streaming..there’s been times when songs were there on a playlist one day ..and greyed out the next.
💿’s are still around and given better transports, DAC’s, meta data..they stand ( like vinyl) the rest of time .
Great video.

The best way to save CD's isn't a new format, it's for people to continue buying new music on the existing CD format. The problem with that currently is that I can buy a second hand disc off Ebay for a quarter of the price of a new one, so while i wholeheartedly support CD's, I haven't bought a new disc for about 3 years, i have only bought second hand ones.

Why do i still buy CD's; because i prefer to own things that i truly appreciate, and because, quite frankly, they sound superior to streaming even when they are played via the same DAC.

Growing up, we were all music fans for awhile. Only some of us kept up with it. But only some of us are readers, yet bookstores still exist. Currently, the CD has its niche and is doing well enough with a ton of players still available from Cambridge Audio, NAD, Marantz, Rotel, Pro-Ject, Rega, Yamaha, etc. (plus expensive, high end brands like McIntosh). Redbook CDs sound better than they ever have (well, depending on how the disc was produced). What we need to keep the format small, yet healthy are cool looking, inexpensive players that can sit on a kitchen counter or in a dorm room. Something that younger people and parents of teens see in Urban Outfitters, Crate and Barrel, etc. Attractive storage and display furniture is a good idea as well. Key word: "lifestyle."

I like the box sets, especially the ones and where you get every studio album from a given artist

CDs are too entrenched worldwide - sales may have declined but the format will continue, not to worry.

The only way I see an additional Hi-Def CD technology working is if it had a 16x44.1 layer to read on legacy equipment. Much like the hybrid SACD’s which by many accounts sounds amazing on a regular CD layer. The “future” imo is simply this…CD transports, which allow you to use the DAC of your choice and an upgrade path to change the flavor of the sound. Much like we change our cartridge to change the sound of our turntables. This is the new Audiophile path to CD Heaven..
