Bible Study in Depth: Books you need in your library

We live in a 21st century world, with a 21st century worldview.
To understand what was going on in the time, place, culture and words of people we see in our Bible, we need extra resources!
The massive gap since scripture was written has left a divide in our understanding of the geography, culture, literacy and language of the time.
This distances us from the full understanding we can have of the meaning of the texts of our Bibles.
In this video I list the books you'll want on your shelf for a life time of in depth bible study.

Light:
Talk thru the Bible

Scholarly:
The World and the Word (OT)

The Cradle, the Cross and the Crown (NT)

Theology:
House: Old Testament Theology (1998)

I Howard Marshall: New Testament Theology (2004)

Schreiner, New Testament Theology (2008)

The geographic Gap:
Satellite Bible Atlas by William Schlegel

Zondervan Atlas of the Bible

The cultural gap:
History of Israel: Kingdom of Priests
James Jeffers; The Greco Roman world of the New Testament era

Literary Gap:
Sandy & Geise, Cracking OT Codes
Amazon:
Ryken, Words of Delight

A simple, printed list of titles in the description of a video like this is enough to please me. It is such a useful tool and encourages viewers to delve deeper into the recommended books (or audio or movies, documentaries, etc.). You have provided a list of titles plus subject matter, plus links to vendors. Much respect. This means viewers can have confidence in your recommendations as they don't have to simply take your word for it.

I also recommend the Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible, The Archaeological Study Bible, The Thompson Chain Reference Bible, The ESV Study Bible, The Holy Land Illustrated Study Bible, The NLT Illustrated Study Bible, a nice Bible Atlas and the Old and New Testament set of the Bible Knowledge Commentary.

You should do a course on the Bible from start to finish all the history and everything in a very educational based way. I have always wanted to learn the Bible more but tbh the courses I have found the teachers are sooo boring I just fall asleep. You have great energy in your videos. I'd 100% pay for your course to learn what you know on the Bible.

I use a Thompson chain reference Study Bible and I love it sometimes I need help with the reading though because I'm not that good at reading but it is a really good study Bible. There is a good book called The Bible and world history that is really good I don't remember who it's by but that book is amazing.

I like to focus on the cultural gap combined with the literary/hermeneutical gap (the way Jews interpreted scripture). The insights are amazing.

I use two reference books a lot when I study. I have a bible dictionary: "An Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words by W.E. Vine" and a Greek/English Interlinear New Testament (Textus Receptus - not the newer manuscripts whipped up by the Vatican in the 1800s).

Hey Darry, thank you for putting this together. I haven't heard of any of those books so I will look forward to adding them to my library. Currently, I have the ESV Study Bible with "The Literary Structure of the Old Testament by David A. Dorsey." I really love it. I also do have the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible, The Moody Bible Commentary, The Bible Among The Myths by John N. Oswalt, and some of the books from The Lost World series by John H. Walton.

I like “What’s the Bible All About” by Henrietta Mears. It’s timeless and very understandable. A person can pick up an inexpensive copy at a used bookstore.

Kia ora Dr Burling, I find the 8 volume IVP Dictionary set indispensable. The Lexham Bible Dictionary (which is free) is also a resource I consult a lot. The Sacred Bridge (Carta’s Bible Atlas) is my choice of atlas, but it gets overwhelming. Luke T. Johnson, The Writings of the New Testament, and LaSor, Bush and Hubbard, Old Testament Survey, are the two biblical contents books that I have found most helpful.

So glad to have found this channel. I use an Illustrated Bible Dictionary and two HCSB study Bibles, one of which is their Apologetics Study Bible. But I must admit I also sometimes consult The Living Bible and, less frequently, The Message. Also The MacArthur Bible Commentary, but while helpful I find it only helpful sometimes. I think I'll add one of the Atlases you've suggested.

Anything that talks about how one part of the Bible uses another part; Beale's Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament, Hay's Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul, and Schnittjer's Old Testament Use of the Old Testament. I've made a collection of these books on Logos, and have set it up so that my passage guide searches for any time that my passage appears in one of those books

Hello, thank you. Have you seen the movie Nefarious (2023)? If yes, what do you think about it?
