Danfoss Turbocor: the oil-free compressor that transformed the HVAC industry

Turbocor is the world-leader in oil-free compressor technology, and the world’s first oil-free magnetic bearing compressor for the HVAC industry. It has transformed the HVAC industry and accelerated the adoption of technologies that increase energy efficiency, while reducing the environmental impact.

This amazing journey started in 1993, when an international team of designers and engineers formed an R&D startup company in Melbourne, Australia. Although they came from a wide range of professional backgrounds outside of the HVAC industry, they were united around a common goal: to change the industry by creating the most efficient compressor ever built and eliminating oil from the system, which is the primary reason for compressor failure and performance degradation.

The team had very specific goals for their oil-free compressor design: variable speed, direct drive, fully-integrated, oil-free, size of a matchbox, it should cost $1, and it should be 100% efficient. They were truly breaking new ground, as technically, no one had developed a compressor of this type before.

They had to build many of the tools they needed from scratch and on a limited budget. This video chronicles their exciting journey – from their humble beginnings in Melbourne, to the first stages of large-scale production in Montreal and finally to the partnership with Danfoss and relocation to the heart of the HVAC industry and global center for magnetics: Tallahassee, Florida.
