Having a mentor isn't having a new best friend, in fact they don't line up with each other at all. Friends are equalized great companions to talorate differences and have fun together. Mentors are in charge of you and certainly not always easy. They are there to teach you and to pull some students back into reality if needed like this one in the video. No, mentors aren't friends.

I am just weirded out by how mentorship has been monetized. Which makes me more likely to not trust the person.

Where's the rapport? :P Those requests weren't unreasonable and a good mentor would mirror the style of their mentee. I sensed lots of judgement coming form the mentor with her facial expressions and body language. With some mirroring and some empathy, I'm sure the mentee would have been open to hearing the mentor rather than desperately trying to be heard all day long. Then when she's heard and ready to listen, some progress would have been made.
