$125 FIXED Almost EVERYTHING On My CHEAP Tesla

I bought a 2013 Tesla Model S85 that broke in the parking lot at a friend's office nearly a year ago. Eventually he had it towed to his house where it sat for the better part of the year. I ended up picking it up from him for $7,000 even though it's completely dead and had plenty of other problems. The high voltage battery is on the way and that's a story for another day. Today we're fixing all the other issues the car has for just $125 of parts.

Common Questions:

What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus

What do I do for a living? Make YouTube videos.

Can you wheelie? No, I suck.

Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.

Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

Instagram: WatchJRGo

Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)

Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.

Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.

Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.

Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo

Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

Oh the insane reboot wait time, so scary in the interim wondering if the car will ever come alive again. Between this Tesla, the McLaren, and the Bentley, you are plowing through what was years of the most stressful and annoying cars that I have ever owned in the course of a month.

I work on these cars for a living (well, mostly "other" Tesla powered cars like the RAV4 EV and Mercedes B-Class, but lots of Model S's as well), and on this particular vintage of Model S, there is another SUPER IMPORTANT thing to check on it in terms of common failure modes.

One of these most common problems we see on these is a failed coolant seal on the rotor of the motor, which can flood the drive unit with coolant internally. We rebuild lot of these motors for this issue at the shop where I work, but often times they can get to a point where they are beyond saving...

It's pretty easy to check if the seal is good or not by removing the rotor speed sensor, so long as you can get under the car and remove the rear belly pan. Just look up "Model S speed sensor check" on YouTube, and the how to video we made should be near the top of the results.

Feel free to get in touch with me if you've got any questions.

I just wanna say huge props to the guy for doing a great job packaging those parts. Well done.

Replace the 12V battery or you will continue to experience weird issues with the screen and locking and unlocking. A new 12V battery may even get the suspension going too. You’ve invested a lot into a new traction battery, another $200 for the 12V will make it a lot easier.
Finally the car will not charge the 12V battery when in an error state so keep it on a battery tender until you have cleared all errors.

So nice of Jonny to let you use his shop while you're looking for your next location. When do we get an update on that?

To get the window up if you can reach the connector for the motor, you can use a “power probe” to manually inject 12 V into the motor, forcing the window up. I’ve had to do this in my vehicle.

I love that you love cars so much. A good robot veterinarian cares about his patients.

To unlock your frunk or trunk, you need to press it twice instead of once. To close the trunk with the key then you press it once

Electrified garage makes a door handle rebuild kit with MASSIVELY upgraded parts to make them basically bulletproof. It beats replacing them every few years

Yes the joys of evolution and forward progress. That’s the cost.

Once you replace the battery remember to fill it with coolant before you install it otherwise you will be purging/vacuuming the cooling system forever … also bms faults/isolation/and firmware will have to be updated with Tesla software before the car can run

Kudos for not swearing! Well, maybe not since we noticed this vid is only 15 minutes long, lol. Kudos instead for some great editing. Too bad the transitions from dead to working and the chatter w Johnny were edited out. He's obviously into learning all about ev's too. Very much looking forward to seeing the new battery installed. I remember I had to code a new battery into my Audi's computer before it would start, and later a dealer told me I failed to reinstall the battery vacuum hose. EVs mean a great deal to me. I know shyte about auto mechanics. It's my chance to catch up. My father was a WWII marine. Growing up he wouldn't let my brother and I work on or buy a car. He became a cop - cars and kids, say no more. My first car was a used '60 Ford falcon he got from another cop. My first purchase was a Ford bronze and black 390 Cobra air Mach I that I couldn't drive past a service station without fighting the wheel. I'm 78 now and a former F-106 USAF electronics tech. . Bring it on.
Oops. just noticed Hoovie dropped a comment. Will have to go back and read the replies.

Happy to see you are taking on the Tesla project. Like you attitude for learning which is very addicting to your viewers. This is a great series. I always heard that the cost to replace a Tesla battery is $25, 000 but that may be if Tesla installs it. I wanted to buy one but the cost is way too high for us.

And this is the future? This is crazy! I can see these end up being disposable just because they're such a PITA!

Who could have imagined that electric cars and all computer controlled everything would make cars more difficult to work on? Give me a 57 Chevy please!
