The Wasteland Workshop DLC allowed for the live capture of various creatures and adding them to your settlement using a Beta Wave Emitter to pacify them. I don't think I'd planned on having a Ghoul farm when I started this playthrough - it just kinda happened. The settlers seem fine with them wandering around the neighborhood, and it certainly makes bandits think twice before picking a fight.
