Interesting. I sort of sympathise with this: they do say, however, the new body works much better than the Z50 in several ways - but I wouldn't want to be paying more than £500 for a non pro DX body. Thing is - you have to try these things for yourself and make your own assessment. My favourite camera for my studio shots is a £650 used 150k actuations Nikon D3X (which Ken says is rubbish.) I've had it 2.5 years now and still absolutely love it. Note: I am old, English, & eccentric - so my views can safely be ignored by you trendy young fashion followers. 😀

I don't get the bashing of a ZFC being a re-bodied Z50. Price wise they are more or less the same, on average currently £50 more body only looking online, not sale prices, which for a retro style version of a body people like isn't a huge difference. Its not like they have released it and then charged thousands more in cost, that would justify some bad press but personally I don't find it an issue. The question is was the Z50 a camera for you? If the answer is no then neither is the ZFC. If it was then do you want a retro looking version of it. Also which camera company doesnt just 'repackage' its systems, Fujifilm are notorious for it, three or four different versions of more or less the same camera with different feature sets and price points to reflect, Panasonic and Leica do it, everyone does it in some form or other.

I got the Z50 a couple years ago- been pretty happy with it. That said, I'm not a pro. I first bought the P1000, which is fun, but has limitations, so I added the Z50. I'm ready to advance to a better Z model soon.

I don't think the Z50 is as bad as you feel that it is. I use it for a travel camera and it does a nice job - I also like that it takes all my Z lenses - so as a FF Nikon Mirrorless pro shooter it is a good companion. I am inclined to agree with much of your comments regarding the Zfc but will say this - for the young content creator/vlogger crowd this could be a really good camera - it has the vari-angle screen that they have been screaming for and the lack of a grip is not that relevant to them - especially if they are using it on a selfie stick.

I will also say (and I think you agree on this point) that it is a good looking camera - there is something about the nostalgia that makes it look great - I used to shoot with the FE 2 and this reminds me of that a lot.

Am I planning to get it?

No, because I do not vlog and in every other way the Z50 is just as good - except the Z50 does have a really nice grip for its size, which for me makes it better than Zfc. I do think the Zfc will sell reasonably well for Nikon though and if that is the case then it was worth making - especially because of your point that they didn't do anything new (used all the old parts - except the screen) and just updated firmware.

To that end, I do feel like Nikon should update the Z50, Z5, Z6 and Z7 firmware to give the updates that they gave to Zfc - all these cameras are using only one Expeed 6 processor so there seems to be no reason why they cannot update these other cameras in the same way as Zfc to build a little more good will with the folks that are buying their cameras.

I think the Z5 is the best value from Nikon currently (or at least, when it was on sale for $1000). It has dual card slots, IBIS can be charged/powered via USB, and has great image quality (that rivals the D750). For a beginner FF camera or a backup camera for a professional, the Z5 IMO is the best value in Nikon right now, and probably FF. (The RP is probably the closest competitor to the Z5, and it is cheaper, but lacks IBIS and a second card slot.)

Why on earth ? You are too American to understand it ... ZFC is small, most of people don't drive a car, and having a small light weight camera over a big one is a plus. Canon M50 was number one selling camera in Japan for this reason. This is small, good design not expansive and it takes good photo. Normal people are not asking for donations to buy camera they actually have to work.

Yeah the Z5 is a very good camera, but it is different niche.

I ended up selling all my Nikon stuff almost year ago and got R6 and couple lenses . But I just can’t connect with it … got the Nikon fever again as I always do and scored NIB z50 2 lens kit on fleabay for 840 shipped which is a steal. I LOVE it. So small and light and FUN. Fun is lost when you accumulate and start carrying too much shit… I actually just ordered ZFC with 28mm kit. And I owned many Nikon heavy hitters over the years… D300, D700, D500, D4, D5 and few others… like d7100 and Z6. I’m more frustrated then anything that Nikon didn’t put ibis in the zfc or didn’t update the camera in anyway from the Z50 ( which already uses 6 yo albeit great sensor) . I think its sexy and will be real joy to shoot with…. In the hindsight should have got z5 or z6II but It is heart before brains in this instance for me lol🤷‍♂️

ZFC is a tool like any other and depends on use case. The Z5 is the wrong camera for my use case. Unless I want to spend a ridiculous amount of money for a Z7ii, Z8 or Z9, the zfc is the best tool for what I do in the nikon range.

To be fair, most reviewers are not wealthy so they don't have the money to buy all the lenses they review. Reviewing shouldn't be exclusive to rich people.
