What is your opinion about consciousness? Is it fundamental? Let me know what you think.

I loved this video for a particular reason. I am an engineering graduate from the foremost school of technology in India (and now world renowned) named IIT (Indian Institute of Technology). Although my education was totally "scientific" and thus "materialistic", i grew up surrounded by the Vedic tradition of Vedanta philosophy which posited (5, 000+ years ago) the concept of "Neutral Monism" called Advaita, which translated means "NON-DUALITY" with the name "Brahman" as the SOLE underlying Reality with the ONLY "attribute" of "Awareness". Listening to this podcast was Deja Vu!👏

I've looked at several Youtube entries on 'Consciousness" and so far this is the most clearly-explained and compelling one. I come away from watching/hearing this with a much more comforting and fascinated viewpoint than I had before.

I am a science graduate and earlier I thought only through the lenses of materialism until recently. As I dig deep into origin of universe, life and consciousness my belief into something beyond our eyes could see our brains could comprehend becomes stronger.

"Conciousness is fundamental". The idea was right in front of me the whole time. It's such a freeing realization

I used to be a hardcore materialist but these days I'm just confused

I said it about your video about the simulation theory, and i say it about this too, Phenomenal editing, so well put together, the images the music, timing of the clips, the information and the narative of voice. This is in my opinion a video that is one of THE best on youtube right now, cutting edge subject for mankind to study and pursue, the coming years will show how important. Thank you for dedicating this kind of attention to every part of your video, and i hope you stay close to the edge 😊 of the frontiers of human potential, and understanding of what it is that we call reality.

Partner, I have been thinking about consciousness since I was fifteen and over the course of the years I "got it"; I recognized the fundamental strangeness of consciousness and its inability to be explained by the reigning doctrines of materialist scientism. Countless times I have tried breathlessly to explain it to people and I am always amazed to find that so few see the magic. Thank you for your channel.

I am 85 now but I remember clearly the instant when I became conscient. It is like waking and be conscient of reality. I was then 9 months old, my mother told me years later.

Life, consciousness and self-awareness have been integrated from the beginning of proto-life; from the development of the initial self-replicating nucleus protected by a cell wall that allowed diffusion inward chemicals for energy production and outward of toxic materials.
In a mass of available chemicals the proto-cell had the need to decide which energy producing material to allow in and which to deny access; in effect "I choose this one. I do not want that one"
This would be the beginning of self-awareness and consciousness that developed in all life forms of the planet earth over the next 3.5 billion years acting in different ways in different life forms

Wow. Blown away. This might just be the way it is! Conciousness may be fundamental to the whole of the Universe - and the conciousness I experience is then just a perspective and an aggregate of the conciousness of the cells of my body, which all have their own conciousness(es). In a way also on the molecular level. This was a liberating idea. Thank you. 🌟🌱

I was so glad to see that this was out. Maybe the best overview production I've seen on the subject. I'm surprised you didn't bring up Donald Hoffman's conscious agents Theory. I did see a quick shot of him. Along more psychological lines, is Ian McGilchrist's work on the relationships between the hemispheres of the brain. It gives a wonderful account of how we've arrived at the world we currently live in. His 2009 book "The Master and His Emissary" and soon to be released book "The Matter With Things" should be read by anyone seriously interested in consciousness. I think he'll be instrumental in our advancing beyond a world of toddlers who think we're hot shit because we have rockets and computers.

After a full blown, spontaneous, nearly instantaneous kundalini awakening in the seventies and 45 years of subsequent meditation sprinkled with intense psychedelic experiences, I assert that consciousness is, preceding time, and that everything else is an expression of it. Pure, infinite, cosmic, God consciousness is, and it's nature is to express itself. It is the only thing that is really real - everything else comes and goes, but it just is. Consciousness is; awareness implies one that is aware and something to be aware of - the observer and the observed; perception adds the process, giving the observer, the thing that is observed, and the observation - something happens. I use a hierarchical structure with unity at the peak and multiplicity at the base as the primary structure for my framework for understanding my experience of the world. Of course it's just a way of connecting the dots and is not actually what is. Anything describing reality, isn't reality. The best we can do is create models or frameworks that are more or less accurate, detailed, and comprehensive.

Everything takes place within consciousness. Everything we experience takes place within consciousness. We cannot peek around the corner of our experience to see if it matches some free-standing reality. Yet, there is a world that resists our desires. We don't get everything we want. Not everything we try works. Some things work. Some things don't work. Some things work better, some things don't work at all. It is the working that defines reality. An ongoing process.

I really really appreciated your explanation of IIT, it's been so difficult for me to wrap my head around alone and you made it make sense!

I am convinced that the fundamental "ground" of reality is "consciousness"; but this is just the beginning of the adventure... We will not throw away any of our knowledge... however we will have to recast part of it... and we will have to discover much more than what we were able up until now.

Nelson, thank you again for your hard work that brings us more insights in where we are at as developing human beings. Your synthesis of the evolution of science and philosophy encourages us to extract our own views on the world at large. Once more we are reminded of the limitations and deceptions of our physical senses. I have not witnessed anyone to bring such a clear and complete report of human endeavors in a half an hour elaboration.
