THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE (1997) - The Best Movie You Never Saw

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven. Those iconic words come from John Milton’s classic work Paradise Lost. Milton also happens to be the name of Al Pacino’s character in 1997’s horror drama, THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE. Directed by Taylor Hackford, THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE is one of the most underrated films in the careers of Pacino and Keanu Reeves as well as an early treat in the careers of both Charlize Theron and Connie Nielsen. A modest box office hit grossing $153 million against a $53 million budget, coming in second during its opening weekend to I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER. THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE holds a mediocre 63% on Rotten Tomatoes yet consistently ranks as one of the best performances in Al Pacino’s illustrious career.

Despite the film's cult status, it's often neglected when discussed in the context of Al Pacino or Keanu Reeves' careers, or as an important stepping stone to the big time for Charlize Theron. That's why THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE is this week's Best Movie You Never Saw!

Keanu Reeves actually taking a major pay cut for Al Pacino to be in the movie shows how cool he is

I don’t know why people haven’t seen this. It’s an amazing, genuinely creepy movie that builds tension so effectively. Just awesome.

The part where his wife barricades herself then slices her own throat open through the window still gets me to this day. This movie is a masterpiece I watched it right after it came out.

I remember when I watched this in theaters, I left knowing that Charlize Theron was going to be a star. Her performance in this flick gets forgotten about, but her characters distress in the latter half of the film is extremely convincing, and my heart generally aches when I think about it.

What I love the most about this movie is that it’s a glimpse of that can be if he made a single choice. Everything that happened in this movie was from the moment in went into the bathroom and looked in the mirror. That’s was a powerful realization.

Pacino's monologue on God was INCREDIBLE.

I've watched the Devil's Advocate a dozen times; each time I found a different aspect to a character or their line of thinking that has subtext that isn't readily apparent. Every actor and actress in this movie is excellent and believable for the role. It is well photographed; it's pacing is constant- the climactic scene of Pacino as John Milton is a tour de force. Pacino makes the case for Satan, a sophistry of unmitigated gall and self aggrandizement that exemplifies the mendacity of Pride. So vain, so self congratulatory, he punches every button of human ambition and excess. Believe it or not, as a Christian, I became more aware of the trickery of the Devil in Milton's speech. Understanding that level of cunning has given me ideas on how to safeguard myself from the rationalized temptations of our world. The Devil's Advocate is a singular film, there is nothing quite like it. It is smart, it is emotional in way that most people can understand. The opening gives no hint of the ride the viewer is about to take, a ride that once they finish, they will never forget.

I'll never forget the first time Tamara Tunie revealed her true self. Scared the crap outta me and shifted the whole tone of the movie in a flash. Fantastic, brilliant movie that had quite a few "OH SHIT" moments.

I speak for the older crowd when I say... We couldn't have missed it! ☺️ But the younger generation might never heard of it, that's true. Al Pacino is the star here, imho. His character is diverse and exceptional. The volume of his acting actually terrified me as a teenager. I had to watch this movie several times over the years to calm my curiosity or need that the good always wins. Can also remember some disturbing sequences and plot twists that made me loose some sleep.

I remember that scene from The Simpsons when Homer asked Marge can I play Devil's Advocate. And she was like sure, then he goes and plays the pinball machine game called Devil's Advocate.

This movie has a underlying disturbing feeling of creepiness/darkness when watching it even though it's not a flat out horror movie. I've loved it from the 1st time I saw it in the theater when it came out but I never watch it alone even though I'm a hardcore horror fan.

Man, you really tried with that Pacino accent and hell puns. Don't do it ever again.

I fell in love with Charlize after this movie (Ok, and Connie Nielsen too). Very campy, but in a good, 90's way.

Who would have predicted The longevity of Keanu Reeves’ career?…. Outlasted so many 90s actors just because he’s Keanu

Gotta love Al Pacino is seen chewing roles.

Keanu trying to act (and pretty much succeeding), Al Pacino munching the scenery, and Charlie...sweet Charlize. This is one of those great films that gets forgotten.
