Bagpipes create a primal feeling of aggression.

If you put 20 young men together in shit circumstances, they WILL bond. No marketing or other psychological mechanisms required.

The brothers in arms thing isn't fictional. You might spend 3-12 months with a squad of the same people, sleeping, eating, shooting, even shitting next to each other. You spend so much time with these people, most people don't even spend that much time with their close friends.

The war trumpet was for communication. Morale isn't a concern for the trumpet. It's for relaying close range orders without line of sight, reliable communications, or compromised communications.

Actually the reason for trumpet and flags is because they are communication devices

That brotherhood is not a fiction. It is an adaptation. You become something. Not a hack. Not a trick.

Academics have a curious contempt for common sense understandings of things. A blindness to it. A sophistication that obscures what is real.

the brothers in arms thing comes through shared experience. You spend time with those people to the point that by the time youve run out of things to talk about, you all know each other's entire lives

I think its more the fact this isn't the family you chose but in war its the family that fights for you and dies for you vuce versa that is a extremely close bond

This guy has some good points on some subjects, but here you just need to be on a team to survive, there is no manipulation or placebo effect. Armies are like that for thousands of years. When your life depends on the person next to you, he is your brother. You can say that you are manipulated in order to be persuaded on going to war, but when the time comes, your mind shifts and survival insticts take over.

When the soldiers who got honors are asked why they often say, "I was just protecting my friends."

These are not tricks. You become brothers in arms naturally through hardships you endure together.

“Creates a confidence in yourself that you can’t auto generate” not necessary true but I understand his point. Competence, experience and wisdom can generate confidence. Most youthful people don’t have all three so the conform to social norms as a crutch to fit in. The older you get the more you understand and the less you care about it

It's the other way around. You don't go to war with them because you consider them brothers. You consider them brothers because you've gone to war with them.

That's actually such a interesting point no one truly focuses on. A self placebing effect. So many things are like this, people need to be hyped up to feel confident, or to feel like they're a bigger and stronger guy some people ask you to hold them back.

We are all unconsciously adjusting our brain chemistry by different behaviors to feel better. We are happiest when we feel part of and accepted by a community of people, with regular social interactions.

In war you’re not fighting for country or politics, you’re fighting to protect your fellow brothers in arms

Just love it when someone tries to explain something about soldiers and what they feel when they've never gotten closer than reading a book

I don't think a marketing expert will ever understand what motivates a soldier and this guy has expertly demonstrated that.
