The cassete player is somehow connected to the RasPi/Spotify Media Server. When a cassete is inserted, the tags required for playback must be on it, so the playlist needed is loaded off the server using that very tag.

Thats the only way I could explain myself how that works. But its PLAIN. AWESOME. :D

This is the greatest RPi music mod I have ever seen! Well done! I am planting RPi inside an old (not that old though) hifi system and you inspired me for a new idea: I can put USB flash sticks inside old cassettes so the actual storage will be on "tape". What do you think of it?

Nice set up man. I'm running unbuntu mate 16.04 on my pi server but recently the OS crashed which one are you using? Also, what sound card is that? I've been having trouble with the libvacodecs and have spent the last 6 months chasing depreciated packages. It seems like you have this down to a science tho👍🏻

I have a few questions if I may - super cool project, I might try a similar one!
- Are you streaming spotify over wifi? If yes, how do you handle different or new networks?
- I'm assuming you're using NFC inside cassettes and a reader inside the case, do these have spotify search params saved on them or did you assign IDs to them and store/read them somehow?
- How are you detecting button presses?

I think the only thing missing here is a rechargeable battery :p Great project!
