It will hit hard once markets realise that Trump is serious about tariffs. There will be repercussions if the US isolates itself from international trade.

Trump's brain only understands "Me". He's going to be surprised how well Canadians do "We".

The American media is missing the story. This is not about reciprocal tariffs, this is about a growing consumer backlash against American products and brands all around the world, from whiskey and agricultural products to vacations, machine tools and military equipment. Global consumer boycotts will hit every sector of the American economy. Canada was the first country in which consumers began a boycott of American products but this has starting globally and it appears to be accelerating.

She's so amazing. Trumps problem is that he underestimates everyone.

Canada is turning away from the US. New PM Carney chose to do the traditional first visit to Paris today, followed by a meeting in UK with first King Charles and then the UK prime minister...something about going forward with stronger military and trade ties. Canada already has a free trade deal with the EU (it is called CETA).

"The USMCA is the fairest, most balanced, and beneficial trade agreement we have ever signed into law. It’s the best agreement we’ve ever made." Donald J Trump look at some of these agreements, I’d read them at night, and I’d say, ‘Who would ever sign a thing like this? Donald J Trump (2025)

Canadian here.
Trump is transactional, he's discounted everything Canadian's has done for the US to zero and that's yielded strong negative sentiment up here.
I want Americans to know, we appreciate you; we just don't want to be you.
We have trade deals that accomplish everything that Trump is after, resources, security.
Hopefully he comes around to reciprocal reduction in tariffs and we can go back to our every day lives.
Zero sum is really dumb. We can both thrive together, independently.

Canadian here. Ontario can't shut off the power to the US without damaging the grid and causing blackouts in Ontario as well. Surcharges are the way to go and we definitely should apply them if future tariffs are put on us. Quebec and BC sell much more electricity to the US and have DC connections allowing them to shut off power to the States. We should put surcharges on gas, oil and potash as well if more tariffs come. These are critical resources to the US (except natural gas) that cannot be easily and quickly replaced meaning the US will continue to buy these resources with the surcharge added. Meanwhile we need to invest big in infrastructure projects to the East, West and Hudson Bay coasts to increase exports to Europe and East Asia. Europe is looking to rearm and secure supply lines. With the unreliability of the US and break with Russia Europe will be looking to Canada to meets it's needs. Europe, other wealthy nations, and even the US, will be looking to invest in Canada as supply chains pivot and the US is looking increasingly unstable. Don't waste a good crises. Elbows Up Canada!

In real time, USA is losing international markets for the F35 and naval construction for former allies. USA picked Russia and will live with the consequences for decades.

Forget USA for 4 years and do all that is best for Canada only - this is the best what Canada can do.
We in Europe will do the same, there is no sense to make business with somebody from madhouse.
