Arashiyama bamboo forest (grove) in Kyoto is worth the 15-minute train ride from Kyoto station and a must-visit when in Japan. The surrounding town surprised us with how beautiful and open it felt compared to downtown Kyoto. There are a lot of tourist shops and restaurants on the main road but also tons of cute neighborhood streets if you keep wandering. It is a fun place to spend a morning or even a whole day if you decide to go on a hike to see monkeys. We didn’t hike up to see Monkey Park Iwatayama as it was the evening for us and we chose to take in the evening light along the river. The bamboo forest itself is a very curated path and can get very crowded. Even with the crowds there is something about bamboo that is so peaceful. We are so glad we had a day to explore this town.

Travel tip: We would definitely recommend going early for less crowds and leave time to sit by the river and enjoy the peace of the open spaces.
