BMW M1000XR Review | Superbike Performance, ADV Practicality

The 2024 BMW M1000XR takes the engine from the S1000RR superbike and puts it into the comfortable S1000XR package. This is the highest performing ADV style motorcycle ever made - and competes with the Ducati Multistrada V4, KTM 1290 and 1390 Super Duke and Adventure, and others. A sportbike - no, superbike - for the real world. #motorcycle #sportsbike #s1000rr #bmwmotorrad

Would you buy the XR over the arguably more practical GS? Sound off below.

Australian viewer here, Was watching the speedo change on the acceleration runs and was thinking it’s pretty quick. Then realised that it’s reading in mph rather than kph.

Interesting question. I’ve already voted with my wallet for a 2023 R 1250 GS. Super happy with this bike. That M 1000 XR is way too fast for this old man. Very scary indeed.

I am 71 and have owned many bikes over the last 52 years of riding. My 2016 XR is by far my favorite bike and the in line 4 in this bike is my favorite engine, hands down. This bike is all day comfortable but at the same time it has exhilarating acceleration, handling and braking. I love speed and handling but 165 hp on the standard XR is more than I really use and I appreciate the comfort the electronic suspension provides on the standard mode. This is the ONLY bike I have ever owned that I was so thoroughly in love with that I did not change a damn thing, not the seat, not the handlebars, nada. I have a slightly larger windshield. Ian your comments are often consistent with my experiences and your reviews are unmatched in honesty , thoroughness and objectivity.

Watching motorcycles evolve is fun, But for me personally having watched all your vids since the very first, watching your channel evolve has been as much..if not more fun.Love your channel mate.If your channel were a motorcycle it would be at the top of it's class.Keep it up man awesome. Also much love from New Zealand :)

1) best channel on YouTube, period.

2) I’m glad to see an in-depth look at this bike. The XR has never really made sense to me until this review. BMW positions it on their site as an ADV bike. The DNA is clearly sport bike with a higher seat. I now sorta get the intent of the bike. It’s far too powerful for my abilities but I can appreciate its look and power.

Ian, to answer your question: I would take the big GS over the XR even for street only use. The reason for it is that I don't like I4 engines. I have ridden a few and I find the top end power too difficult to access and at those RPM I am already going way too fast even in 2nd gear. I much prefer power down low. Anything else on the XR I prefer over the GS. But that apocalypse of an engine is a deal breaker for me.

If money was no object I would get the M1000XR. I don’t know if I could ever see myself spending $25K plus on a bike though. They both are amazing machines!

Had a 2023 GS and hated it, felt like a tank. Took the XR for a test and what a difference. So nimble and the quickshifter actually worked. Then I bought a new Triumph Tiger 900 GT pro...more than enough for me.

Always a joy watching your reviews! I traded in my 2017 S1000XR for a 2024 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro after you bought one and reviewed it. I've had numerous bikes in my 59 years of riding and you are doing what I should've done 20 years ago, be an educated influencer. I go thru bikes like I have the money to do so...but I don't. It's just a bad habit of mine to buy the next best thing, personalize it, spending more, then end up selling it to go onto the next bike. Currently I've been happy with the Tiger 900 RP, rode it out to Sturgis in August and survived riding through a 50-60mph wind/rain storm (at least it felt like 50-60 LOL). I'm thinking about the M1000XR but my lack of restraint really worries me.
Thank you for what you do and keep it up! Rubber side down tough.

I watch all of your videos, and I came to realize that the US has the most beautiful places and amazing weather to really enjoy owning and riding a motorbike.
I hope one day life give me a chance to live and ride in California.

Before I started riding I thought I’d love a bike like this, now that I am riding, I know I’ll never own a bike like this. 😂

I changed my M1000XR for a MV AGUSTA Turismo Veloce. Many could say it’s wild. But…
I’m getting old here and it doesn’t make sense to me not being able to use the full potential of a bike without getting arrested (or worse, injured). The Turismo has the great handling of the XR, but with a much more manageable power (still pretty quick) and a 1000% better engine sound.

I got a left over 23 S1000XR M Sport, literally a step down from this.

I have almost all the carbon fiber bits all over (front mud guard, side panels, rear hugger/chain guard) and holy shit.

Coming off a 22 765 RS, and love riding quite aggressively this bike is just out of this world.

The M1000XR is a totally different world.

I can’t say enough about your review that was excellent. I am actually seriously considering this bike so your review helped me a ton so thank you.

I'm on my second BMW 1200GS. Sold my 2014 with 95K miles and bought a KTM 890 Adventure thinking the lower weight would be better for me at 73. But after 10K miles and having to call a friend to help me pick it up in deep sand. Sold it after deciding 470 pound KTM is still nearly 500 Pounds and a 1200GS is heavier, easier to pick up and will do fire roads all day long! I bought a 2015 1200GS two years ago with 18K miles and $6K in extras for $12500, a killer deal at the time. Now the 2013 and later water boxers prices have crashed and deals everywhere. For myself my bikes may see redling once a year if that. I love torque and living in Northern CA. with world class twisties where 3500 rpm with get you down the road in a hurry!

I loved my S1000XR gen 2. Docile and super easy and light at low speeds, rev it out and it goes like a rocket. It always felt special and riding it was an event, but you could ride slowly too and it is much more relaxed at low speeds than the gen1. If you don’t like IL4 engines you won’t like it, but I hate the boxer engine, I find it sounds horrible and despite the torque it’s boring to me. So it very much depends on personal choice.
The reality with the M is that it offers more only at the very top end, with quite a lot less practicality, and a much heavier price tag. One of the weak bits of the XR is that the brakes are good but not great. The M brakes look phenomenal. Here in the UK it would cost a fortune to insure and I’d either get killed or lose my licence, or (most likely) it would get stolen. I’m glad it exists but not for me.
