Fresh for 2024 is the latest motorbike in BMW Motorrad's 'M' range - the M 1000 XR, a 198bhp sports tourer with an aero package and plenty of carbon but no room for luggage. We forced Adam 'Chad' Child to go and ride it for us in Spain.

For me this isn't a tourer. Small tank and no on bike luggage. That said I want one! If only I could afford it. 😂

Divisive looks but I think the M competition package version looks great. The problem for most gen 2 XR owners is that other than the M badge and another £10K, in the real world the standard bike is more useful and practical, and for 99% of riders, just as fast. I’m sure they’ll sell as many as they can make and I’d love one, but I’d get the rear rack parts back on to fit hard luggage (assuming it’s possible). And to add insult to injury, with the regular bike BMW has dropped the (obviously fastest) red paint finish and replaced it with an insipid dark blue metallic…

I just bought the 23 XR M package. Was worried I should have waited for this one. However, my wife still likes to ride w/ me and I love having room for my semi-rigid top bag. I made the right choice! ;-)

Ive owned a 2017 s1000xr for nearly 7 years , i did have panniers for a short while but over 120mph it ruins the bikes handling, i have now removed all the the racks from the back and i use sw motech soft luggage when needed, the bike looks much better for it, also i have wanted more power from my mapped upgraded 165 rear wheel bhp BMW for a while so this new m1000 xr is on my shopping list. Who cares what they class it as sports tourer, crossover, lets face it you can tour on any bike, end of . If you want racks then fit racks, simples. BMW have built the bike what i have wanted for ages. A 200bhp XR. Happy days and lots and lots of big wheelies

Nice one Chad. Would’ve liked to see having the ability to at least option panniers as let’s face it only an alien (current or ex WSB or MotoGP racer) will only be able to get close to being capable of using 100% of this madness.

Your review is by far the only one worth reading and/or watching!
I’ve read or seen them all and the continuing thread is “too powerful, not necessary, over priced, difficult to ride” to a person these reviewers are poor riders and totally intimidated by the bike - thoroughly unqualified to comment in my humble opinion.
I can’t wait for my test ride and the opportunity to order my own.
My father always told me “it matters NOT the power it’s how you control it” that counts. If you are NOT intimidated and are suitably experienced (40 years and still breathing no injuries) buy this bike without fear - it will is a sport touring game changer!!! I’ve been waiting for just this all my riding life (46 years) and it’s finally arrived. Life is good 👍 enjoy 😉

I CAN think of another bike that would be just as fast across Europe . The Kawasaki H2 SX SE. Similar power, just as comfy if not more so and can take luggage so you can use it for more than posing outside Costa !

A sports tourer that can’t tour . Brilliant!!!

Great review Chad! Was there any hint of being able to fit the luggage racks that BMW took off the bike? I definitely want to buy this bike but I do need the luggage capacity. Aside from aftermarket stuff I was really looking forward to this bike being a wee bit more practical. Is the pre-load manual only on both ends like the DDC that the older gen S1000XR and S1000R? Keep up the good work Chad & the team!

After riding my 1200 Multistrada for the last 10 years and 80k miles I test rode a regular XR. It didn’t turn me on and I went with a Tracer GT because of its fun engine. I ride mostly twisty roads which makes the 120 hp perfect since I can ride it more at the limit. 200 hp on any bike is bonkers, especially on a touring bike. Or maybe it’s just an upright sport bike 🤪
Anyway, I applaud the manufacturers for building those premium bikes, they help them make $$ and keeping building fun bikes for everyone

Is the H2SX better in every way? Luggage, bigger tank, same power more torque. Easy to ride. Your not going get across Europe any quicker.

I'd be in line to buy one if you could fit luggage. That is a must have for me in a touring bike, as it's currently configured, this is a tall supersport, not a tourer, IMHO.

I had the first gen and loved it, on trips with the boys I never used the panniers. The top box was always more than enough and as this variant is more sporty again it needs the top box mount as an option and if you need panniers you should be looking at one of the s models.

You can't get far on an unrestricted DE Autobahn before you hit roadworks these days, and with no lane splitting, you're as slow as everyone else. I've done 250 kmh exactly once in the last three years, and I live here!

I was really considering this one, but not being able to have paniers is a big disapointment. M do it right with titanium and carbon fiber paniers, otherwise its a caricature of a suspersport tourer.

Might be time for another category. They call this a sport /tourer, which is fine, but it seems to upset a few as it doesn't carry bags. Personally I want a sports bike that is comfortable. This fits the perfectly.

Why they're assuming rider don't need someting? Like pillions, larger screen, active cruise control (like on autobahn)

Curious to see if a rack can be installed. I’m a reckless 80 guy, even put it on my H2SX. As long as I can strap that down, I’m in.
