Rotary mowers may scalp less at first glance but that’s due to different height of cuts. If you put reel and rotary at the same height, you’ll find reel scalps less.

Reel mowers only do worse because typically they are used to cut lower. If you were cutting under an inch with a rotary mower you would run into more problems than with a reel mower. The rotary mower with four wheels has less area of contact to the ground therefore can more easily find dips, hills and valleys and cause scalping if used at that low hoc.

Reddit is awful; hardly anyone there has real-world experience with the things they rage about.

Half an inch?? *Scoff* okay city boy, take your 20th of an acre lawn and torture it like that, deprive the bees, take that gas up every other day, sure. Some of us have lawns better than five times as big as the house, and aren't rich enough to service our riding mower once a month when we already rescued it from a rust heap of five dead mowers. Congrats. You're king of the suburbs. You still commute to work like us too.
