REEL MOWING - Why it's over-rated.

When I inherited my bermudagrass backyard, I immediately started to plan on mowing it low and the best way to do that is by reel mowing. Bermudagrass responds really well to reel mowing, but the end result may not be worth the effort.

Thr reel mower has a much better quality of cut. You can prove this to yourself by examinining individual stalks of grass with magnification. Reel cut grass should have a sheared blade of grass with the blade having an even, green end. A rotary cut blade of grass will be fractured on the cut end and it will be brownish after cutting. The ovrall result will be a darker, more dense lawn with a reel mower, the grass being healthier and less stressed.

Very true good video, about to buy my 3rd reel mower, went from a Briggs & Stratton, to a Honda Trucut, to a California Trimmer. I love it though ... I have Tiff green in my front yard I use the reel for Bermuda and fescue in my backyard but I use a rotary mower on that..

Great topics! Thanks for sharing the different viewpoints on reel mowing. Time and cost are the two main reasons I don't reel mow my Bermuda. I do plan to invest in a new machine in the future and have debated on getting one. Right now I am leaning towards a lawn tractor instead. That could change. Just researching reel mowing. But I do have St Augustine. I cut at 4 to 5 inches because that is best height for this type of grass. Is reel mowers out for me ?

I use a fiskars, unpowered.
Reccommend power raking, helps with leveling the lawn.

Did you scalp? My understanding is that if you scalp and maintain you won't expose all those brown stems.

Chuck is there a riding mower you recommend that will give you a HOC close to reel mowing? I’m running the 25inch McLane on 12, 000 sq ft and it’s consuming all my time!

The struggle is real. Somedays I wish I had a pit crew for the mower, not to mention the need to cut my 14k sq ft 2-3x a week. I thought PGR would be my saving grace but that just introduced more complexity. Never needed to verticut until PGR.
