Southwark is a late arrival on the network, but architects still love it.

I can't believe it took them four hundred years to provide Tube access for the Globe theatre.

Tom Baker as Doctor Who at 1:57. That time traveling Time-Lord really does turn up in the most unlikely places.

Man, this video made me realise how much people bully Jago in the comments, give him some rest guys. He's just one man trying his best to provide you with quality footage and interesting commentary of the city's infrastructure, no need to nitpick every case in which he's not 100% correct about Brutalism, smh.

2:38 - ‘Doze off for 20 minutes and you’ll end up in Walthamstow’ - What a horrific thought. I’ll bear that in mind before taking my afternoon nap.

I worked at this station for several years. There are huge non-public areas and it has various areas off site that are still part of the station (for things like the immense fans) that needed to be checked every day as per regulations. The staff were great to work with. I have very fond memories of the place.

One interesting thing about Southwark is that big blue/green building with the odd overhang over the road. It's a TfL office handling traffic and surface transport operations, and I'd say on a weekday it's where most of the people getting on or off at Southwark are going to or coming from. Worked there on contract for a bit, at 17:01 every afternoon there'd be a swarm of people going straight out the big door and straight down into the station.

As someone who manages a tiny business in the immediate vicinity of this station, this video made my heart hum, thank you!

_”The Cut”_ still has the kind of vibe most of sunny South London once had, largely erased by the massive Lego block buildings that have sprung up like mushrooms everywhere —the one opposite the station, pictured 1:45, is a TFL office block btw.

On Thames boat tours, the guides often joke that you should wave at anyone you see on Southwark Bridge, because they're probably lost. The same may apply to the tube station...

I really like Southwark Station and its design. As a Waterloo East user, having easy access to the underground is excellent rather than use that awful, long trudge to Waterloo mainline. And those of us lucky enough to have a London Freedom pass could go through the ticket gate at Waterloo East walk straight past the underground platforms and exit the ticket gate at the far end onto The Cut. Thank you for another great video, Jago.

A glorious symphony of concrete and steel. I’d cal it ‘modern brutalist’ myself. It surpasses the greyness of 60/70’s brutalism but retains the starkness and clean line. The light well in the foyer looks fantastic at night when the blue lighting is in effect.

I could gush on a lot longer but I’ll say;

Thanks a million for covering my favourite station. You’re the best YouTuber ever and I will now stop pestering.

Although, Chalfont & Latimer...

One of the things I like about Southwark Station is that there is direct access to the platforms at Waterloo East Station from the western end of the station. I think it might actually be closer to Waterloo East than Waterloo Station itself.

Funny that they, too, used that production of The Magic Flute as a reference for the station. There is a new (as yet unopened) subway station in Berlin called Museumsinsel, on the U5, which is also inspired by that stage design, since that station will serve the Berlin State Opera, where Schinkel was working when he designed that production.
As you can see the platform ceilings are blue and they are dotted with "stars" like in Schinkel's design.

I can sympathise re the Brutalist police - never have I met such a grouchy backbiting group of pedants in my life! Don’t let the buggers get you down, and thank you for your great videos - the perfect length for a sneaky coffee break from work!

Don't worry about thinking Southbank is new, I still think of the Victoria line as the "new one"

It's a long shot: As non-londonarian, i would love to have a "here you are" at the beginning of your videos, as i have no clue where these stations are and their locations helps to get more context to the history/information you're providing.

Southwark station is my secret for getting out to the ExCel centre for ComicCon. Travelling in from Kent I watch all the other con-goers get off at London Bridge mainline and then I get to see them arriving on the LB underground platform as my train pulls away.

I love the interval of anticipation between spotting the opportunity for a pun and the arrival of the pun itself.

Thoroughly researched and nicely produced as always. Particularly like the reference to Die Zauberfloete. And the subtle joke about it being no Waterloo didn't go unnoticed :)
