RIP Franco. A legend in Pa when I was a kid in the 70s -- Penn St. AND the 4-ring Steelers. This play encapsulates everything that's good about the NFL.

My uncle was at this game, but he left early to beat traffic. D'oh!

Never been a Steelers fan, but Franco was such a big part of my youth. When I was learning the game and falling in love with football. His death is hitting hard.
Rest In Peace Franco.

I was watching the game and I saw the play. Being a Steeler fan, I was overwhelmed! I still get goosebumps every time I watch it. RIP Franco. You were a fantastic player and a class act. No headlines, no tantrums. Just a down to earth, decent guy. Seeler nation is in mourning. Thanks for the memories, and the super bowls, number 32.

I was stationed at a remote Alaskan Air Force radar site when this game was played. There was no live TV broadcast up there. We were alerted to the play by the one Steelers fan who listened on the radio and ran screaming from his room in celebration. We finally got to see the play weeks later in a newsreel prior to the movie at the on site theater.

I haven’t seen that clip in 40 years or more. And I can still hear me and my family yelling at the top of our lungs when that happened. As a kid of 10 years old, I couldn’t have asked for a more better memory. 70s Steelers forever!

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Franco Harris earlier this morning. My condolences to his friends and family. I remember he had a dream season as a rookie. This play well could have been the play that help make the Pittsburgh Steelers a dynasty of that day. Aside from that this rookie running back had a great body of work leading up to immaculate reception.

I still vividly remember watching this as a young 15-year old Steeler fan living in Western PA. I remember watching Franco run across the bottom of the screen and yelling, "What's he doing?" It's like it happened yesterday.
Then, the following week, my hero Roberto Clemente, died. A week of mixed emotions...

The exact moment when football became bigger than baseball in the United States.

Arguably the greatest play in NFL history, and also an extremely controversial one. There are two things that have been debated about this play for decades:
- Whether or not the ball hit Jack Tatum; if it didn't hit Tatum, Harris would've been penalized, as the rules at the time stated that when a receiver touches the ball, none of the other receivers can touch it until a defender does, at which point it's fair game for everyone
- Whether or not Franco Harris actually caught the ball; it's extremely difficult to find a good camera angle of the moment when Harris initially got the ball, so most people today don't actually know the true answer to this; NFL rules at the time stated that the ball was incomplete if the ball touched the ground at all, even if the receiver ensnared the ball in his arms beforehand
The high quality footage in this video actually shows what happened in regards to both questions:
- At 0:51, the footage conclusively shows that the ball ricocheted off of Tatum, so Harris was able to legally receive the ball
- At 1:18, we get the best angle that we'll ever see for the reception by Harris, and it clearly looks like the ball doesn't hit the ground
It's nice that we have this footage preserved for all to see, not only because of how legendary the play is, but because the footage shows that the calls made by the referees were indeed correct
