This play literally saved the life of Steelers photographer Les Banos, who was on the roof, filming the "22." He would have been on Roberto Clemente's plane on December 31st, but the Steelers won stayed alive in the playoffs and had a game against the Dolphins on the 31st so Les had to work. He could go with Roberto, and so he lived another 39 years. True story.

Keep in mind: this game was the Steelers' first playoff win in franchise history.

I found this film going through the Raiders Storage facility in early November of 2019. We tried to track down the film several years before while doing research for the Immaculate Reception A Football Life episode and put in a call to the Steelers who hold us they didn't have it. Was so glad the film was still in excellent shape.

All my life (born n 1970) I was always confused why there wasnt better footage of the play. They have multiple cameras. I cant believe im actually looking at this play from a birds eye view for the first time in my 53 yrs on the planet. Thank you to whoever found it and to whoever posted it.

My grandpa was at that game.

Art Rooney was in the elevator to The Steelers locker room when this play happened. Mr. Rooney had sworn The Steelers had lost.

That’s crazy he got the instinct to just run up field and the ball just found it’s way to him

Dude, this is amazing! A Dallas fan at the time, I'm pretty sure I was watching the Cowboys-49ers pregame when they showed this unbelievable clip. The pathetic Steelers, who hadn't had a winning record in 10 SEASONS were (a) in the playoffs and (b) beat the deadly Oakland Raiders on such a freakish, controversial TD. So hard to put into context the incredulity everyone experienced over this moment.

This coaches all-22 view is sublime. Excellent resolution and frame rate. Seeing the Raiders' perfectly executed 3-deep man-under coverage, seeing the TIGHT END run a deep flag route, seeing Frenchie Fuqua spot the hole in the coverage, seeing Bradshaw emerge from duress and anticipate where Frenchie was going and flinging it, watching Franco come out of the backfield -- out of nowhere, really -- to grab the deflection, seeing Jack Tatum go for the KO, seeing Skip Thomas slip and fall down, recover, celebrate and say, "Oh shit!" to himself and to see Franco absorb Thomas' love tap while tight-roping the sideline. Jeez, so much to watch.

Thanks for posting it. It's like watching it all over again for the first time. Thanks so much for posting. I can't stop watching it!!!

Wow! I bet I have seen replays of this play over 200 hundred times over the years, but never from this amazing angle. Thanks for providing this!

For decades, the only footage I ever saw of this play was the NFL Films version, always wondering what the actual play looked like. Thanks for this!

It's absolutely beautiful, both the wide angle allowing us to see the entire play unfold--observing every single player on the field--and the black and white crispness of the image.

Happy 50th anniversary, and RIP Franco, we will miss you.

What's amazing is that Franco started out in pass protection, but, instinctively ran downfield when the play broke down. Even though he was not the primary receiver on the play, he was still 17 yards downfield (after being 7 yards behind the line of scrimmage) when he caught the ball. Incredible. He made that play and won that game purely on instincts, smarts, being in the moment, and paying attention to details. Somebody coached him up well along the way.

One thing I never noticed before was the immense closing speed of Tatum to Fuqua while the ball is in the air.

The ball is about halfway between from where Bradshaw threw it to where Fuqua was on the field and Tatum is a good 7 yards from Fuqua and hits Fuqua right as the ball gets there.

Two backs split, two wide, WHILE under center FOR THE LAST PLAY OF THE GAME.

My oh my how offenses have changed.

This angle weirdly reminds me of the Boise State hook & ladder vs. Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. The path that the ball traveled, and how the defenders reacted to the sudden change in trajectory... pretty incredible how history can repeat itself in different ways.
