Gig Workers Striking Against Uber/DoorDash/Lyft: Why I Was WRONG

Workers continue to Strike, Protest and take a stand against the Corporate greed that Uber, Doordash and many others commit via their apps.
My mind has shifted on how I look at the workers in the front line.

The best tool we have is the decline button. Use it. If drivers decline crap then the apps will have to bundle it and pay decent, raise the pay or let the customer do without. The other day I turned down an order and just seconds later they offered it to my wife for less pay. Needless to say that order did not go with us. The old saying is: If you work cheap, you are cheap. That is how they will see it. The answer is right in front of us: "DECLINE". I don't work cheap.

I'm glad you finally opened your eyes, Pedro. I believe we used to be middle class. We are in an economic crisis. It takes more and more for us to survive. The companies keep taking more from us. Instead of competing with each other we should be cheering each other on. Helping one another. We can learn from it. Kindness matters most! I hope everyone of us succeeds. Best wishes to all!

It's a simple fix: give the driver the delivery fee. You know, the one that customers think is going to the driver.

I have nothing but respect for a person who admits they were wrong

Base pay is below $2 in some cases. I did a double order the other day on UE. The order met my parameters in terms of dollars to miles but on completing the order and looking at the breakdown ; I saw that 1 of the orders had a $1.58 base pay. Ni wonder they love to send stacked orders

This was one thing I always thought you were wrong about Pedro. I always thought it was a good thing for gig workers picketing and protesting. Though there's been minimum change they can't give up because the goal is to bring more awareness to what these greedy corporations are doing. Gig workers know all the corrupt that these greedy corporations do daily, bringing light to the public is the goal. And I've always felt the government needs to step in and start mandating these companies. Things really aren't too far from the bottom on most of these apps anyways because look no further than all the $2 orders that come out. I think you are able to actually see it now that you're not on Doordash anymore. You're getting to see more and more how a lot of these other apps are just racing to the bottom to crush the worker to fill their own pockets off gig workers backs

They keep giving me no tip stack orders without telling me they’re stacked orders. They keep offering me low pay offers > I decline > they send it to me AGAIN 30 seconds later for even less pay. It’s illegal to penalize independent contractors yet that’s exactly what they’re doing with the tier system. They keep showing me one mileage & location on the map but after I accept the offer it CHANGES to nearly double mileage. So let’s create the change.

💯 So true. So true. Punch up. Don't kick down.

The customers could order from next door and give a 25% tip on a $16.64 subtotal (meaning a $4.16 tip). And the platforms are going to give the order to someone going 10 miles total instead of of someone who's sitting inside the restaurant when the order was placed. The platforms hold all the power. They need to be regulated.

I used to do doordash for the freedom and flexibility, and having that is nice and all, but at the end of the day, none of that matters if you can't make enough to survive. I went back to my W2 job with no regrets. Guaranteed income with benefits. Good luck to you all.

We need to organize and stop being taken advantage of. We especially need a better app and support. They keep making it harder and harder to make a decent living! Between the oversaturation of drivers and changing the rules, it's impossible to make money during the day. Even as a Platinum Driver.
And I am sorry but people with EBT should not be ordering anything from DD! PERIOD.

It drives me crazy that WE have more control over the money we make with these apps than we realize but it has to be a TEAM effort but the problem is when you have these poor people who have always just learned how to “survive” below the poverty line, you can’t change their mindset. As the pay gets lower the only thing that changes is the quality of worker you get but these apps don’t care about that! I see dirty Dashers driving cars that are falling apart all the time! Delivering orders paying $2 going 10 miles! More than half the orders are upside down now Meaning, you’re essentially paying to deliver it But how do you get 5 million Dasher to say enough is enough let’s all banned together and stop doing this dumb shit because they will pay us more if we make them pay us more but the fact is, so many just don’t care because I just had that poverty mindset That they’re not worth anymore.

The people coming here and work for garbage is a huge reason everything has gone to crap. I am anti union but enforcing the law of illegal labor is a huge issue. It’s become taboo and we are not getting any benefit from it and all the people who work labor are getting screwed. Follow the law.

One more thing about non tip customers. With all due respect we have to get out of our minds that customers who don't tip just can't afford to tip. I've done enough earn by time in enough states to plus dollar houses with enough food to feed a family to know that it's not that they can't afford to tip, it's they don't appreciate our time, so those who take anything less than 5 dollars and hope for a cash tip, your wasting your time.

Thd gig apps did a number on drivers' consciousness.
I knew it was a race to the bottom when drivers on Facebook groups said they would take more trash when drivers went on strike.
It seems most drivers look very very short term. Less pay, less tips, less if any challenges offered.

Fitting post for Labor Day weekend. Would be nice if gig workers could have a union or we got a few laws passed that that actually worked in our favor, but our best bet is to just keep declining garbage orders and work towards our private goals in the meantime. My goal is to be truly self-employed someday and I'm working towards it!

Comes down to what we want in this country. We either rise up together or fall divided.

There are drivers trying to deliver for multiple apps at the same time on the same run. Everyone has all the apps on which lowers the base pay.

Dude I appreciate you making this video. I can tell your changing and growing. I will say I heard from other gig app drivers (specifically Uber Lyft). The drivers saw so many picketing for better pay. The drivers who are not picketing, know Waive and Cruise are near to their areas and they will be taking the pay even if the picketing for real driver better pay works. They are converting rides. They are taking a stand and making their own customer lists. Like I said though, auto driving cars are on the doorstep or are already in their area. The striking will not help. The company is trying to weed out short run drives and force the drivers to only take long runs. These are huge companies and I agree striking against them to let their voices be heard on crappy pay is important. But, in the long run was it better to strike or drive and convert? The cruise and waive cars ( I think that's their names), are being sent out in fleets over just paying a driver fairly. I can appreciate the effort but, is it really going to help in the long run? Much love from NC...keep up the great work!

Here is the way that would go…

A few people strike. A promo comes out and the people lower than silver status come out and grab it. Nothing accomplished.

Let's do it. I've got guts. I don't feel like we have anything to lose at this point. We can collaborate and figure something out.
