Thank you for your moral and ethical standing. Been in building and renovation for over 20 years now. Your videos are giving me a push to be on your side of things.

My grandmother had to change ALL the exterior doors to keyed locks as my grandfather’s dementia progressed. The sheriff installed them for her after he wandered out of the house barefoot and was found a few miles away by helicopter.

They live in the Appalachian Mountains.

After a structural issue, she had an inspection done. He told her to remove all the keyed locks as they were illegal 🤦‍♀️

She told him, “Thank you dear, I’ll have my daughter get right on that after we’re cold in the ground.”

I'm a designer. I design to codes and regulations. I work with people that half read code and redline "bad designs". I spend a good portion of my time writing out explanations why my designs still meet code by explaining the complete reading of code to counter their incomplete reading of code. This short does an amazing job.

I hope you keep making these videos. Some of us who see them, learn. This makes you a teacher, aside from an inspector. The best combination of titles. Thank you brother. 🙏

Cy continue educating the public while exposing shoddy work, violations of code, etc...I appreciate you!

Love how the keyed lock made her feel secure. Right next to a giant person sized window of glass.

I love to see the code actually referenced in these discussions. Good job!

Dude, love you and your content! Crazy that YOU are the "radical" one and the one getting "called out".
Keep fighting the good fight!

Great, but the keyed lock on your door with a big glass window has another problem. The window. If they want in they'll go through the glass.

Interesting information. My niece is severely disabled and LOVES to have the doors open, even in the winter, so my brother and SIL have key deadbolt on both of their main doors. I never thought of it before because it was being done for her safety, but its something that may have to be considered. Thank you!!!

A neat extra feature of a sliding glass door is that it can be quickly converted into a human-shaped emergency exit if you panic hard enough. Downside is that you might need stitches afterwards.

I was living in the Philippines for a bit. The place I was renting had a "laundry room" basically it was a small unfinished area with high walls, an unfinished floor and open-air roof (with a rebar grill) where you could manually do your laundry.

I may have been playing with the doorknob a bit without thinking. Then, I went in to wash some towels and quickly realized that I had locked myself in. I think the idea was that if burglars somehow made it thru the rebar grill, they couldn't make it into the rest of the home. My roommate wouldn't be home for several days, there were few places to hide from the sun and hwhile it had water, it was non-potable! I didn't have my phone. I tried shouting for help but apparently noone heard me.

Some of the scariest few minutes of my life ...
Until I realized the door was a "piece of cr#$" and I managed to kick it in, in no time.

If you're considering installing a lock on an exterior door, please consider things like this!

I’m not a home inspector, nor am I in any associated profession. I am, however, glad that I now know the difference between egress and exterior doors.

You’ve gained a subscriber, good Sir.

Our local fire code says "ALL exterior doors must not have key, special knowledge, etc." Not saying you are wrong by any means just giving an example of local laws that you referred to. As always great information.

In a tv news photographer and early in my career a fire investigator invited us into the scene of a fatal fire in New Haven CT. There were fingernail scratch marks on the door with a keyed deadbolt where the body was found. Pretty sobering for a 23 year old kid just starting in the news biz.

I think the reason this is required for egress doors is because you want people to swiftly and easily escape from an emergency inside the house. If the key on your egress door is internal, you HAVE to have the key to escape a dangerous situation.

This is also important for factory owners, as factories used to lock their buildings during work hours to prevent workers from leaving the building. A factory caught fire, the workers couldn’t leave because the owners had locked the door, and all the workers had burned to death. It’s that kind of immediate emergency that requires people to get out FAST for which this part of the code was made to address.

Just a bit more context there.

As a firefighter I have seen the keyed deadbolt lead to the death of the home owner. They had a fire on the first floor ran downstairs to the closest door forgot the key and when they went back upstairs the smoke killed them.

I have zero involvement in this area of subject and yet find this content unbelievably informative and entertaining. I just listened to someone read out and explain the code guidelines for door locks. He did so in a manner that was easy to follow and understand.
What I take away most from Cy's content is his integrity and professionalism 🎉🎉

this is a good video, I actually saw the previous videos and I thought it would be weird to have a key cylinder lock on the inside of the house, this explanation makes a lot of sense, thanks Cy

I really appreciate this format of short from you. It's informative, to the point, and that makes it easy to share with others. Please cover more of these common code misconceptions.
