A Dumb Door Code Violation

This is a very quick story from an AirBNB in which my team was staying during a job last year. The host, wanting a quick and easy entry code for tenants, installed a TurboLock YL-99-SS doorknob. But they installed it by swapping out the door's existing deadbolt.

That resulted in a door which required two hands performing two independent actions simultaneously... something that became maddeningly complex for even able-bodied folk (especially if were carrying a laptop bag or something in our hands) and is a pretty clear-cut code violation.

Because I'm a nice guy and I had my "Solve Most Problems" bag with me... I opted to fix the door for the host. I may have neglected to inform them that I was performing this kind and valuable service. ;-)

The best thing about this (aside from your fix) is that the owner most likely still opens this door with 2 hands each time 😂

That's a massive fire code violation as well. Every exit needs to have "one motion egress".

If I know Ollam is coming to my house I just go ahead and remove all locks on everything. I mean, really, what's the point, anyway?

Accessibility issues like this make me really annoyed.

This can kill people, and I'm not being dramatic.

I don't know why YouTube recommended this hilarious accessibility fail to me but I laughed. Thanks for fixing it for them

Ah, gotta love when you get these opportunities to help folks out like this! I'm sure they were more than happy to see you solved their door problem.

I always love these little side stories. Curious how the owner reacted though, or if they didn’t even notice.

I'm not the only one who fixes stuff unprompted! That makes me feel a bit better. Friends always ask me to fix one of their car's problems and I end up finding and fixing several once I get into it. 😸 "I changed the oil like you wanted, but I noticed your key fob didn't work so I put a new battery in it. I noticed the TPMS light was on so I pumped up your tire. I noticed your check engine light was on with a code for the thermostat so I cleared it because it often doesn't come back, but let me know if it does. I also saw your windshield was splattered with bug guts and I couldn't see at all out if it so I razored it clean with Invisible Glass and put Rain-X on it for monsoon season coming up."

That's beyond unsafe for a business.

That is the most insane thing I have ever seen. They would have known how much of a pain it was when they went to open the door to leave. That's it, the internet is too stupid I'm heading to bed.

Come on over. Please circle around with no other contacts for 14 days first, then come on over. I got lots of things that need to be fixed. Just let yourself in, I'm sure it won't be a problem for you. Your cloned prox is always welcomed.

I'd have kept the deadbolt, not issued keys to it, and thus it would only serve as a privacy lock (no possibility for lock out because you can't lock the deadbolt from the outside). In the event of an overstay/death/whatever, you have the deadbolt key to get in.

I'd also have got one that was the right shape because the unpainted area is just lazy.

Deviant Ollam is Chaotic Good personified: "I'll damage/vandalize your property so that you don't get sued."

Lol, locksmith here, I’ve been going away weekends with family and the joke is that I “somehow” always get the room with the door that needs repair, good job 👍

I can't even count how many times I've seen this while working on short term vacation rentals... and even had property owners or managers tell me to do NOPE.... I'm already not happy with the fact that the door looks like s***, but I'm NOT violating code.... Typically your fix is exactly what ends up happening since a lot of them don't want to actually talk to a locksmith before buying hardware, or FSM forbid, spend $60 more to do it SMDH....

The first reason you fixed it for them is because you got tired of opening the door with two hands, wasn't it?

The amount of code violations I see daily is scarily high. It's almost as if there are no more trained professionals being hired to do a job correctly 🤣

I just bought a house and literally all the doors were like this. Why do people do this?? I've never seen it before

i have had businesses give me a hard time about this kind of thing in the past... I am like "look I wont put a deadbolt here. period." different situation than ollam but nobody cares about code till somebody dies.

I would think they'd get calls all the time that the door doesn't open from renters and want to fix it just for that reason. How many people would figure out how to open it without specific instructions?
