Discovering Deep Sea Swarms | Safety in Numbers

Deep Sea Aggregations Explained.

In the deep sea, going alone is rarely an option. The harsh environments of the deep ocean are an imposing challenge for a lone organism to face, as the dark conceals many dangers, while dazzling bioluminescence deceives unwitting prey. For this reason, deep sea animals tend not to spread out. Instead, wherever possible, they come together in their masses to create abundant patches of life in the lonely depths. Hotspots of biodiversity, in stark contrast with the otherwise barren stretch of darkness. Safety in numbers is a fool-proof survival strategy that increases their chances of finding food, evading predation, or having reproductive success in the endless blue. From vibrant coral gardens and deep sea scavenger communities, to expansive jellyfish blooms that cloud the ocean surface, these are the animal aggregations of the oceans.

I do not own any of the footage. I write the script, narrate, and edit what footage I can find, which is allowed due to YouTube's 'Fair Use' policy as these films are for educational purposes. Footage used belongs to the incredible marine conservation societies of Schmidt Ocean Institute, MBARI, WHOI and the Ocean Exploration Institute, along with various other YouTube sources.

Seeing those lantern fish dart about and illuminate themselves to avoid the octopuses was mesmerising

One thing I never read about in the comments here is the effects used on the narration. The very subtle reverb is a wonderful touch and gives depth, or volume, to the awesome world you're so beautifully describing to us.

What an amazing video and channel, and a great reminder to us all why our oceans inhabitants are so important. I noticed some clips I have seen from the Nautilus Live channel, another group that does great work. I think I’ll be rewatching this and sharing it to all I know.

As soon as I saw the science paper covering the largest deep sea colony ever recorded. I instantly thought about you and your channel and it's content and scientific coverage. They were mapping the ocean floor and then stumbled upon Seemingly never ending nest's of ice fish at the bottom of the Antarctic Ocean. Something scientists have never seen before. They have lots to learn about how the colony supports itself. These ice fish have clear blood appearently, they don't have hemoglobin in blood like we do appearently. It's facinating they each have their own circular nest, they think the female passes away after reproduction. Then the male guards the babies eggs.

The quality of your programs is next level. Your stuff is so fantastic that I have a hard time understanding why you don't have millions of followers. You will though. Keep it up. You will.

I must say, this video is the equal to any other you've produced to date. You combine excellent musical choices with skilled writing and narration and beautiful videography to explain the incredible complexity and detail of marine ecology.

I hope your time at University is going well and that you'll use your skills to further expand marine biological knowledge in both the academic setting as well as for the general public.

I look forward to more of your videos.

There is another process on the ocean floor that can create life oasis like hot black smokers and cold seeps. You never mentioned it in your diverse videos. It is called serpentinization and produce heat and some chemicals. In the middle atlantic a place called lost city is a good example of those oasis that are not hot smokers or cold seeps. Thanks for your work!
