Thank you sir, you are a campion and a life saver. Water heater popped, and realized this house is so scaled over, none of the shut off valves either work, or if they do, they broke and started leaking. It's gonna be a long weekend...

Hello Rodger, it’s very cold out today and one of my pipes busted so I called the city and they took awhile to get here. I couldn’t wait any longer so I quickly came to YouTube and clicked on this video. This helped me so much thanks so much !

I really appreciated this video at midnight as my pipe seemed to cause a geyser in my front yard. Thank you for creating it!! It was easy to follow, even for a tired person wearing PJs and shutting off the water by flashlight.

I was today years old when I learned how to turn off the water so I could fix a pipe. Thank you!

This video is great because you get right to it and give me the information I need at the start, then I stay for the useful context. I just needed this one thing but I'm subscribing now because this video was so good.

Here's something to keep in mind. If you live in the southern states such as Texas where freezing isn't a problem, these shallow boxes aren't a problem. If you live in the northern states where freezing occurs, keep in mind the shut-off valve in the yard is going to be much deeper under a round curb stop shaft. You'll need a special curb key with a long shaft to reach the valve. This is because the water lines in the cold states need to be buried below the frost line to prevent them from freezing. In the colder states it is usually a requirement to have a main shut-off valve inside the house someplace usually near where the water line enters your house in the basement. The curb stops up here are mostly for the water company to turn your water off if you don't pay your water bill. One word of advice. I try to work the valve a couple of times at least once or twice a year to help keep the valve free. You don't want to end up with a leak and have the valve end up being frozen. By turning it closed and back open again, it helps to keep the valve free and movable in the event it does need turned of quickly. My house actually has 2 mains in the basement. The main one and a secondary main right after the meter and pressure reducing valve which I like because if one valve is stuck, I have a second one as a backup.

Thank you for taking the time, energy and effort to make this video and explaining the importance of knowing how to do this.

thank you! My house shutoff valve leaked - had to turn the water off at the street. Valve was buried under 5 inches of mud and roots - dug it out, tried to open it using wrenches, etc. and thought, "There's probably some secret special tool to do this that the water company uses....I'll check YouTube!" - Fantastic! Only thing was the tool at the hardware store was too wide, so I had to pound it with a 10 pound dumbbell so it would fit, but it finally worked.

I think I should move to Texas lol. Here in Pennsylvania it's illegal for homeowners & master plumbers to have meter wrenches. We call them curb keys. Our water meters are in the house that's the only way to shut the water off. Out side we don't have water boxes there's just a valve pop the the cap and stick the curb key in a shut the water completely off.

You might point out, Roger, that in regions with colder climates the water meter is usually inside. I've shown lots of people where there meter is because they didn't even know what it looked like.
