For All Mankind - Apollo 23 Explosion Newsreel

The explosion, caused by a faulty S-II LH2 valve (and a host of other lobbying and political scandals to go along with it), not only leads to the delayed relief mission of Apollo 22 currently stationed at Jamestown base, but a full on FBI investigation into NASA with concerns about infiltration by Soviet spies.

i love how the command module smacking into the ground manages to be brutal despite nobody actually been shown getting hurt, it just leaves the imagination to image what happened inside

Poor Collins

this is the second time he never landed on the moon

To all those saying that they would expect a larger explosion from a Saturn V, I believe that the Saturn V wasn’t fully fueled during this sequence, because workers were on the pad and what we saw was vapors from inside the tanks blowing up

In the real world, Gene Kranz is alive and well, while Glynn Lunney just passed away. RIP Glynn, you are number one among the unsung heroes of Apollo.

Killing Gene Krantz is like killing Luke Skywalker. You just can't

You know the sad part about this show is it probably would’ve taken the soviets beating us to the moon to keep a decent NASA budget around. Because you know, going to the damn moon was exciting enough for some people 😒

Fun Fact: In this ALTERNATE universe, Michael Collins was to be the commander of Apollo 23.

What was Gene doing in the tower and not at JSC in Houston? Lol

It was like the whole rocket didn't budge during that whole horrific explosion, except the escape system.

To be honest I kinda feel let down by this explosion, this is a Saturn 5, more than 3 million pounds of Kerosene, liquid oxygen and hydrogen. This. should. have. been. Epic. Like a small nuke going off, the tower structure would have been completely demolished. Pad-39 would be a big hole in the ground. Instead it doesn’t even look like the rocket falls over from the blast.

That escape tower would have shot into the hammerhead crane on top of the tower which you can see at 0:05 is positioned directly over the rocket. IIRC that crane was only used during relaunch checks on the vehicle and was always facing the opposite way during countdown so as not to obstruct the tower’s flight path. Seems a pretty big goof!

My one complaint about For All Mankind is that someone needs to slap the costume designer for the abysmal job they did with Gene Kranz. As both a long-time Apollo junkie after watching the first Moon walk, Gene Kratz's signature look of always wearing a waistcoat (vest) came from the fact that his wife made him a new one for every Apollo launch. That little fact is in the OPENING paragraph of his entry in Wikipedia.

Barbara Walters called, she wants her voice back! Great job with picking actors and graphics that have the look, feel and sound of contemporary TV news in the 60s 70s and 80’s

The explosion happens in 3 different ways depending on where you see it happening. Bad continuity. But I was in total shock when it happened. I kept saying No no no” it was a gut punch

Jesus the impact from the landing on the beach looks like it would have shattered all their bones and turn their organs into jelly.
