Hosea was the only one keeping Dutch a sane man.

Dutch started his arc after the Blackwater Massacre, the trolley head hit gave him a few more loose screws and after hosea died he started to really lose it

Dutch was a dreamer, a philosopher who thought he understood everything, failed to understand how the world was changing, how the freedom to commit crimes and then move a distance and do it again was running out.

It’s why in the end he defaulted, to manipulation, taking in of desperate men and straight violence and force.

The Blackwater job. I love how, not even showing it, just a couple of mentions of it make it the most important thing out of all of Red Dead 2 history.

Attempting the Saint Denis bank job right after a completely botched trolley station robbery was also pretty stupid. Robbing Cornwall's train when they had barely escaped the heat of the Blackwater massacre is another one. Really Dutch's gang was doomed, because he was lying to them. He told them a story of getting just enough money to escape to freedom, when he really wanted to fight the entire system and die trying.

I think my favorite theory is how Dutch may have had insomnia throughout the game.

Dutch was broken. His life was full of death, crime, and heartbreak. I don’t blame him for going insane.

Villains aren't born, they're made...
...Dutch was never truly evil, he was trying to protect his only family...

For those confused about the meaning behind the trolley crash, there is a theory that states dutch became more and more erratic after suffering heavy head trauma from the crash, I’m pretty sure there’s even a line right after the crash where he complains about hitting his head pretty badly

I wouldn't blame him for what has happened
Dutch really went through much

I think Hosea death had a huge impact on Dutch's downfall, so sad to see him saying to Arthur "you sound like Hosea right now".

The biggest reason for Dutch’s downfall was letting Micah in the gang

Perhaps, but did you ever consider that Uncle's lumbago spreading to him was a contributing factor?

I found it sad how watered down dutchs speaches were near the end, they were a shadow of his former words

Arthur’s tuberculosis was also a big factor.
Before, he’d keep Micah in check just by being imposing. Peak health Arthur would have rinsed Micah. That, combined with Hosea’s closeness to Dutch and Arthur’s likemindedness to Hosea, meant that Micah just couldn’t manipulate Dutch.
I think Hosea and Arthur together could have talked some sense into Dutch
