Submersible pumps should be fully submerged so that the pump casing is cooled by water NOT air, it will work but you are likely going to shorten the pumps life

I had a terrible experience with a Vevor sand filter pump that was defective right out of the box. I'm still trying to get them to fix it under warranty, but they don't seem to care about customer satisfaction. If you ever have to file a warranty claim, you'll be sorry.

If anyone wants to actually make this work, do not use sand in the filter. You can use K1 media or even plastic pot scrubbers. It will allow the muck to settle out without clogging up the sand instantly.

I bet you backwash a lot. Sandfilter are not made for ponds. Biomedia filter is what you really need.
