Have spent a major part of 2025 splitting and cutting up a 100 year old oak that had died a few years ago and finally fell over in the front yard of my hunting camp. Practically wore out two wedges. The wood was incredibly hard and bone dry. I found that a 4 pound hammer worked so much better than a maul. With the maul, the wedge would bounce back so much. Picking your spot to start was crucial. I made myself several big wedges out of a big white oak limb from a tree a storm took down last year. The wood was very tough wherever there was branching in the huge oak. I would start with a metal wedge and complete the splitting with a wooden wedge.

I always place the wedge on the edge of the log so that doesn't happen lol Or get multiple wedges

thats a well used wedge by the mushrooming. Be careful, a coworker almost put his eye out from a price of the wedge flying off

If you cut you splitting block down to 10-12" in height, you will thank me after. You will get much more power out of your swings

I bought a hydraulic wood splitter years ago. No way I'm swinging a maul
