Do you realize how beautiful that is? *_"It's not about who's the best musician, it's about inspiration."_* - Jimi Hendrix.

It's a Gm/D chord. Sometimes he changes to Gm6/D and Gm9/D

This chord sounds amazing in this progression he used. It's not the chord itself, it's actually the progression, which is the context the chord is used.

I think what makes this so emotional is that it kind of sounds like a lullaby. Like when you switch between major and minor keys, it's almost like it's rocking you back and forth. It makes you feel comforted. It starts happy, then gets sad, then gets happy again.

The minor 4 chord (G minor in this song) is very powerful and emotional. John Williams uses is frequently in Star Wars... Minor 4 is easily one of the best chords

Wonderboy by Tenacious D has the same opening riff. It also starts with the D Major chord

This just makes me feel like a man who's lying in bed all alone at night, missing something, but he doesn't know what that is....staring at the ceiling, looking back to his long tiring day, wondering if he'll ever be happy....but he consoles himself with the hope that tomorrow will be better and finally drifts music is such an inspiration that it weaves a story😌

It's one thing to play fast or technical. It's another to play the right chords in the right way... with soul and emotion

Lovely, but, it's not the chord itself that makes people emotionnal, it's the chord progression

In Europe(netherlands and germany at least) we call this a "mol-dur" chord or progression. Basicly u just play the minor 4 chord (minor 6th interval from tonic) in a major scale. It is a a very powerful tool and has been used over the last centuries by many and i mean many composers/songwriters. U keep the tonic in the bass and add an E(6th), so D/Bflat/D/E which makes it sound so haunting because there is now also a tritone(Bflat to E) and a major second(D to E) in the mix. Very famous examples are:
Queen: You're my best friend
Beatles: Till there was you
Basicly every jazz standard
Love theme from Gershwin's: An american in paris
And many many more. It is literaly everywhere. Keep a look out for this awesome chord construction it will change your entire life.
Ps: if u can find the 3 different mol-dur's in stella by starlight, u know u understand what the mol-dur is!

it's not only the chord or the progression themselves, the magic comes from the way you play it!! absolutely fantastic!

This is gold to me.
Just started teaching myself guitar in january. I can't learn this like most people do, this helps me so much as a basis to jump off of..

You can hear this chord progression in Misunderstood by Dream Theater. Beautiful

The minor 4th, much like a well placed key change, is a silver bullet for goosebumps. I also love a DMaj7 in this type of progression. Adds a wistful almost bargaining feel if that makes any sense.

Ah yes, the minor plagal cadence. One of the most emotionally powerful motions in all of music. I especially love your use of a m6 chord here. Gives the whole thing a very nostalgic feel.

This is very emotional, I tried playing it in different keys and it's very satisfying, hearing this composition in different keys gives a refreshing melody. This melody somehow made me remember the time my father first taught me guitar, I love you pal wherever you may be now

Wow the beginning is exactly the progression of the Coco movie theme "Recuérdame". This is probably why it sounds so good and fits well in the movie. cool!
