Some tips
1. Maj7 chords are nice bittersweet chords, generally quite sad
2. Don’t overuse it too much, Go from Major IV chord to a minor iv chord. Or even better, Fmaj7 to Fm(maj7) and then back to I
3. A descending bass. For example, in C Major, start on A, then Ab, then G, then F
4. I think that II7 chords or just Major II chords- they’re not really sad, they just have this certain effect, this feeling, that works in a sad song. In C Major, going from a Dm7 to a D7 and repeating that a couple times sounds quite sad to me

Making sad music is the only area I haven't mastered, but so far my experiments are being successful in that area. is not the scale, is the minor chords that make a song sad.
