NASA’s New Horizons Team Reveals New Scientific Findings on Pluto

During a July 24 science update at NASA headquarters, new surprising imagery and science results were revealed from the recent flyby of Pluto, by the New Horizons spacecraft. These included an image from the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager or (LORRI) – looking back at Pluto – hours after the historic flyby that shows haze in the planet’s sunlit atmosphere, that extends as high as 80 miles above Pluto’s surface – much higher than expected. Models suggest that the hazes form when ultraviolet sunlight breaks apart methane gas.

LORRI images also show evidence that exotic ices have flowed – and may still be flowing across Pluto’s surface, similar to glacial movement on Earth. This unpredicted sign of present-day geologic activity was detected in Sputnik Planum – an area in the western part of Pluto’s heart-shaped Tombaugh Regio.

Additionally, new compositional data from New Horizons’ Ralph instrument indicate that the center of Sputnik Planum is rich in nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and methane ices.

I would never have expected that pluto would have been such a complex and active world. I'd have thought it would have been just a cratered ball of ice, frozen in the outer parts of our solar system.

It is incredible that they were able to discover so much with just a small part of the data of a single flyby!

My greatest congratulations and thanks to the New Horizons team!

So good, so amazing, so inspiring!!! I notice there are fewer audiences in the room than previous events. Please, Please do not stop this kind of broadcast due to fewer audiences. The pure and exciting science in it is just so GREAT. Many science guys including me are eagerly looking forward to seeing the next broadcast.

Not even 50k views?? Really:(??? Something tells me it would be a lot more if a cat would have been included at some point. This is great news, amazing progress and a huge accomplishment for our species. Im pulling my hat for all the hard working ladies and gentleman who participate (d) in this program. Thank you so much

They shouldn't create false expectations by saying "if you are seeing a cardiologist, you may want to leave the room" (9:11).
I expected to hear about something really drastic, like a liquid ocean/lake of some sort, ice eruptions, etc. that would've justified such warning... But seasonal ice transportation, larger atmosphere haze than expected and glacial flow, will hardly cause any heart attacks...
Anyway, keep 'em coming, we want to hear all about Puto and its moons.
Also, 55:35 ... LOL

AMAZING STUFF! And we've only seen less than 5%. Much more than I expected. Could definitely see the swirls. I've got to settle down, I'm getting too excited! But seriously, these are very exciting times!

In addition to sending back Pluto encounter data, New Horizons continues to collect new information, including measuring the distribution of dust in the outer solar system.  We're looking forward to all of these data!

Tombaugh Regio has always looked like a 'butterfly' with a strong S-N centerline and nearly-symmetric W-E splash-pattern...

Hmmm, Cryo tectonics. Really loving the binary planet data. Well done all.
Naming that mountain range Hillary is a massive challenge to future exo mountain climbers. Also well done.

Hey NASA is there an updated version of this round ? It’s now 2021 and I’m wondering where the research went on all of those topics

For a crazy war torn species, we always have an urge to strive beyond our understanding and imagination. Well done Nasa. :)

It's very shoddy to not go back and correct INcorrect words in the captions. As usual, the mistakes are horrendous. So take your "blue marvel" and shove it.
