I always used to call my insurance agent to ask about insurance costs of two vehicles I was considering purchasing. My choices now are so small that I can’t alway weight the results as much as I used to.

I’m buying a car today in New York State but I am a resident of Oregon. I’m here because I’m a travel nurse and need a car to drive back to Oregon. They are telling me I need to pay New York tax and when I register in Oregon they will reimburse me. I don’t know how true this is. It seems wrong. Oregon doesn’t have sales tax.

I don't disagree that resale value can matter but, in general, I think basing your purchases on resale value is a bad idea. And when I say "purchases, " I mean the purchase of anything -- a car, a lawnmower, a guitar, new bedroom furniture, you name it. The reason is simple: when you base your purchase of something on resale value you are, in essence, allowing other people to control what you buy. Why would I do that?

JD Powers statisits show that 96 percent of all car buyers focus on the monthly payment not the overall cost and that statistic has not changed in 20 plus years. You want good relsale value do not smoke in your car definitely do not smoke pot in your car, don't tow with it unless it was made to all those things will devalue your car big time! My dealership we provide a carfax report on every used car we sell. and the carfax for the used cars is also available on line when you look at the used car. totally agree test drive the car! People try on cheap shoes before they buy them why would you skip testing out a car that is worth tens of thousands of dollars it is so important to drive the car you want to to own and don't ever let a sales man have you test drive a generic version either and fake fees do not fall for them

#2 Get a preinspection from a trusted mechanic, The majority of buyers don't have a mechanic let alone a trusted mechanic #8 There are used cars for sale on lots that have had accidents that are not reported nor are they shown on any of the reporting services, buyer beware indeed

Great tips (I already do #1) but I guess I should call my insurance company for a quote before I either get a hybrid or EV.
Saving this video for future reference, but QUESTION: how does shopping for a car you are going to LEASE differ from shopping for a car you are going to BUY (car loan) ???? Thanks!

Do you think using a strategy like "I'll pay (a certain percentage) over the manufacturers price. They can include whatever fees they want just so they don't go over that percentage total" is an acceptable practice, or no? It seems very daunting to recognize and counter all the possible add-on scams, and bogus fees. Do the dealerships make a profit over the MSRP? If not, I don't mind giving them a single digit % as their profit. I'm looking at a 2024 Ford Ranger or a 2024 Subaru Forrester. Both have about the same MSRP.

Based on my research coupled with experience of both mine and friends, only Mazda and Subaru should be considered for buying new. All others have major issues.

These car dealerships are in for their own sticker shock. I am going to offer them my -$10, 000 “Market Value Adjustment” off the MSRP.
