Is El Salvador Safe for Tourists?
In this video, we’ll explore the capital, San Salvador and find out if El Salvador is really safe.
Once known as the murder capital of the world, San Salvador has undergone a radical transformation in the past few years. These changes are primarily attributed to the controversial policies of President Nayib Bukele.
Since being elected in 2019, Bukele has significantly reduced the murder rate from 38 per 100,000 residents to 2.4, the second lowest in the Americas, surpassed only by Canada.
These results have been achieved through what many critics, including the U.S. government, consider authoritarian governance.
In March 2022, a "State of Exception" was declared. This decree, still in effect, strips anyone suspected of gang activity of their fundamental rights under the Salvadoran constitution, including the right to a speedy trial and legal representation.
Currently, over 80,000 Salvadorans are imprisoned due to this policy, giving El Salvador the highest incarceration rate in the world. Many of these prisoners will spend the rest of their lives in confinement without being formally charged with a specific crime. Just being suspected of being in a gang can lead to a life sentence.
Many of these prisoners are being held in the newly constructed Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo, abbreviated and commonly referred to as CECOT.
CECOT is the largest prison in Latin America and is considered one of the largest prisoner capacities in the world.
Today, I will explore an area of San Salvador that was considered a no-go zone until recently. It was so dangerous that even the police avoided it. Join me as I discover if San Salvador is now safe for tourists.
