Many rental properties aren’t owned by individuals or families. Instead, businesses, collectives, and similar entities control the units. Real estate investment trusts (REITs) make it possible to invest in a wide range of properties to earn a profit. Typically, the REITs aren’t just owners of the properties; the trust manages them, too. As a result, the trust can become a mega-landlord, overseeing hundreds or thousands of properties.

It's the landlord. Doesn't matter how one 'becomes' a landlord - 'being' a landlord is unethical. They're middlemen who increase the price people have to pay per month. Doesn't matter if the landlord is an individual, grew up poor, or is a huge co-orporation.

Since 2010, rental rates have gone up dramatically. The average increase comes in at 31%, a rise that would give a property that was rented out for $1, 000 a month in 2010 a cost of $1, 310 a month today. That’s an additional $3, 720 in rent a year.

When it comes to rent, the average yearly increase has outpaced the average annual wage inflation by a shocking 270%. Rent inflation has also exceeded currency inflation by a startling 40.7%.

The only thing is that landlords dont really provide housing. Its conditional and can be taken away at any point. And the things you can do with that housing is limited. It isnt like its a mortgage on a property youre paying off to own. And regardless of how companies or people become landlords, land is a finite resource that people need to have shelter and a foundation. So the fact that it is taken in excess by whoever has the opportunity at the time and then used to turn a profit is why people think its evil. It almost seems like you're advocating the idea that anyone could start from nothing and become a landlord but if that was true then it would be no time at all before no new people could buy houses or have any land. Taking more than what you need of something so finite is just greedy when there are so many people doing without. No matter what circumstances you came from to do so.

If you are becoming poor being a adult and paying your rent, I wonder how your parents did it all those years before you moved out?
