Better way in my opinion is by substituting random distinct value to a and b then we will get the answer as well . But this one will work just need to be scrupulous while dealing with the question . Anyway appreciate your contents man.

@Cath  i dun think you can, because it seems you assumed a+2 = 0

u can imagine you are shopping apples and bananas

apple $3 each
banana $2 each
vip discount $7

so it is intuitive that you pay $3 more for buying 1 more apple

so,
buying 2 more apples, you pay 3×2 more
buying 1 less banana, you pay 2×1 less

so totally,
the chabge of payment
= 3(+2) + 2(-1)
= +4
