What is the difference between Minecraft Forge and NeoForge?

Hello everyone, thanks for clicking on the video. The other day, I was downloading some Minecraft Forge mods when I noticed a new modding platform known as NeoForge... Interested in the similar name, I decided to do some research on this new mod loader and compare the differences between the two. And as you can see, I have documented all of my findings into a short and sweet Minecraft video for viewers like you. Hopefully, by the end of this recording, you will have a better understanding of the differences between Minecraft Forge and NeoForge and understand which mod loader you should choose in the future.

To be honest, having 4 different loaders each with their "exclusive" mods became really frustrating at this point

As someone who makes modpacks, having 3 mod loaders that are incompatible with each other brings me nothing but pain and suffering, not to mention the fact that the modding community cant settle on a major modding version anymore. Every time an update roles out you have to start from scratch again. You found a cool 1.19 mod you wanted to use for your next pack? TOO BAD 1.20 is out now and its never gonna update. Oh hey, this one did update but TOO BAD it switched to the other modloader. pain :(

It'd be nice if we could have a one mod loader that worked with every version of a mod made for it so good mods aren't lost to updates

Anyone who went further than google in their pusuit of modding minecraft in the last 10 years have heard/interacted and was negatively impacted by Lex.

Forge using anvil as icon. Makes Sense, always made.

But Neoforge using a Fox is kinda weird haha

I think that you have missed a point. The idea is that Forge will disintegrate and die out quickly so that Neoforge can take its place. Most users probably won't even have a choice between the two in the next MC release because Forge simply won't survive. Forge does have a new team, but I hope/believe that's just not enough to keep it going. Also in recent updates Forge has broken backwards compatibility by ignoring its versioning scheme. Some mods even lock their Forge version to 47.1.3 because after that there were some unexpected changes that should not be there and broke some mods.

So now we have two mod loaders and two forks of the loaders…

At this point it just pure pain having 4 mod loaders now, i hope in a future someone decide to create a mod that can make all mod loaders compatible with each other. Yea, ik it sounds impossible, but actually exist a mod called synitra connector that works as a fabric and forge connection, and i hope that in a future NeoForge would be included

Lex is a massive hinderance to the modding community, always had to be his way with forge because his ego makes him think he’s untouchable and never wrong. Most mods I play are only on 1.7.10 and the mere discussion of it existing gets you a snarky remark from him and locking discussions because god forbid you ask for help if it’s not the latest MC version.

as a mod developer i hope to god they fucking document the thing

learning to mod is basically a closely kept secret that only professionals (15 year olds that had all the time in the world) that figured out everything on their own know about

basically only people with a good understanding of computer science can learn it if you had nothing else to work with (especially back in the day)

i never liked that there are multiple mod loaders and now there's one more? i really hope that all forge mods will switch to neoforge because it will be even more annoying to choose mods than before

why split evenmore, when y could make 1 modloader which could load all mods, it would have the same loading as the rest

Edit: Also this seems like a similar to case between Fabric and Quilt. Ultimately, I won't pick NeoForge unless that's the launcher with wider support. I just care about playing my mods you know

OH COME ON, NOT ANOTHER MOD LOADER WE DON'T NEED MORE, IT'S ANNOYING ENOUGH AS IT TO FIND MOD I LIKE BUT IS ON A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LOADER THAN THE REST OF THE STUFF I AM CURRENTLY USING

At least they're pretty compatible for now. I tried creating a new profile by copy and pasting the 140 mods in my mod folder into a neoforge profile, and clicking update all to get neoforge versions where applicable, and it just worked.
