Fictional Cultures... my brief thoughts on it.

I feel like culture is one of the best parts of making a fictional world

I may be a casual hobbyist writer...but making cultures and keeping them consistent is one of my favorite parts of making fantasy worlds.

It disappoints me that Menagerie and Mistral have pretty much the same cultural influences. Mistral should be look more advanced than an island made by Faunus that lack the resources of other Kingdom's.

Culture comes from different aspects, including (but not limited to) new technologies that affect the lifestyles of its people and the geography that calls for certain methods, technologies, and crafts. For instance, Japanese food has a lot of seafood since it's a collection of islands.

Honestly the amount of effort put into the culture of a world (or even countries/lands/whatever like VERY good stories) is what makes or breaks a story to me, because if a lot of effort was put into it, we see how people live their lives and how it affects characters (hopefully)

I liked the whole part with RWBY, it was a perfect example of what they did wrong without making the writers feel like complete idiots for doing that. The whole vid itself was a very good examination on how culture affects the media we watch, this was fun to see. Keep up the good work Vexed 👍

Y'know what i find to be a good way to get your mind out of thinking about your own culture and immersed in a fictional one? Take whatever the religious form of slurs and stuff is and change it to something else.


For example, I'm american, and I was raised as a christian. The most common phrase I use that reflects my culture are phrases and words like "Goddamn", "Jesus Christ", "Oh my god", etc.

It's one of those things that i don't even think about.


Change some of the most common phrases is a good way to get your mind off of your real world and in to your fictional one.


"Stars guide me", "To the void with you" may the sun bless you", those sorts of things i find are really good.

Nice sweet and simple video that gets the point across while being highly informative. I myself...personally suck at making my own worlds, but this does bring up important stuff I have to look for. It's amazing how a single line can bring about an entirely new aspect of the world.
